They would use the same one that they put in the D4D in the Hilux. Sometimes wish it was an option in the states.

Yes, I am pretty certain that it is going to happen at some point and time... If I am not mistaken, the Hilux is offered in Diesel... I would jump all over them... I think the real issue is that the US, in comparison w/ europe, has had rather laxed envorimental standards, that have allowed the usage of gas much longer than in europe. Who knows, but I would LOVE to have a Tacoma that can get 30+ mpg!

Doesnt Toyota put a 3.4L (or something) diesel in Europe's Hilux?

side note: I didn't read the end of the thread before I commented :D

I've always wondered why no one has contracted with Caterpillar for diesel engine in a light truck? Of course a D9 engine isn't going to fit in a passenger truck. They could make a much smaller version that has the Caterpillar name. They have a great reputation and everyone is familiar with the brand.

Do you know how difficult it would be to bring in a Hi-Lux to the USA? I think I may have a shot at this...

Definitely a Cummins. I know there is a pretty large industrial division of Cummins so it would be good to know the diesel in my truck has been proven in the commercial and heavy equipment sector.

I really wish Toyota would import the Hilux diesel. I rather that than one of the domestic diesel. Now if someone can tell me how slow I have to drive to get 20+ mpg out of my V6 gas taco.

Chatted with a Toyota guy the other day and word is that there are 2 new truck platforms comming to the toyota line up. One in the Scion line and a new strip down, tacoma sized diesel with 200+ HP and 300+ torque. (Hilux?)

Did he say what model year and what kind of accsy's would be offered on the small diesel. I think the scion size truck would reflect the ABAT which is being shown....imho though!! How certain was he?

Hmmmm I wonder if they will offer a A/T six speed? That would be sweet and help with the mpg too. It's getting interesting for the Tundra model as well. I wonder what will happen with it. The last time I saw a hilux (Kuwait/Iraq) it had a 90 hp diesel in it. I wish Jap was on this forum so he could tell us about his experience with his....

I drove a 2007 3.0 TD hilux when I lived in New Zealand 3 times (100mi trips). I thought it was a great truck and the motor had plenty of power. I pulled a fully loaded 12ft 2axel trailer up and over the mountains. It had no problem and still got great gas milage. I never checked what i was getting b/c the conversion took to much brain power. It did get better mpg than my 3.2TD SWB mitisibishi montero (pajero) when i pulled nothing. that was obvious. I thought it was noticably less stinky. and seemed to have more power than the 3.2TD

NONE! Need a better choice! Seem if they already have a diesel for the Hilux, use one of them in the Tacoma. I know it would need some work to pass US emissions, but I'm sure someone could figure it out.

From how he described it, it sounds like it will be 2-4 years out and they are looking at going back to what toyota was, 1.)Inexpensive (Starting at $15,000 2.) Bare bones (5 Speed manual, manual differential, roll down windows and about the only thing power will be the steering.) And 3 motor options with the big motor being the 200+ from I think the Hilux.

The 2011 2WD 5 lug reg cabs come in around $17,550 MSRP so it's my guess anything in a diesel will be at least $1200-1800 additional or more. The initial demand will keep these right around sticker price so I don't see any bargains here.
