If you weren't going to buy a Tacoma

Closest I've been to offroad with the F150 is up a tractor trail at a neighbor's house to get pallets for pallet gardens. One section of the "driveway" was barely wider than the truck so width is a hell of a concern now! Turning around at the top was a bit of a challenge, but basically took exactly what it took to turn around my Tacoma. The low end torque made it feel amazing crawling up into the field a few feet for the turn around.

Although what used to be back out to the right, pull forward to the left to leave my driveway has now become a 3 or 4 point turn in the F150. No whipping it around in an intersection for a U-turn, or small parking lot either. That takes some getting used to, and more planning. haha

 

If not a Tacoma, God forbid, and money were not an issue... I'd opt for the Ford F150 SVT Raptor with no regrets.

What can I say, the thing's purty.

 

The F150 is managable is some places offroad. The problem is the Ram 2500 the poster was mentioning comes only with a 6.5 foot or 8 foot bed option on the crew cab. In other words, unlike an F150, there is no true short wheel base configuration.

Trust me from personal experience. The Ram 2500, even the Powerwagon, isn't an enjoyable trail rig. Great on gravel and undeveloped roads on flat land, but too heavy for hill climbing, too long for tight spaces, and too wide to get into the best trails. The suspension is also extremely firm which gives very little for articulation on undulating terrain.

 

And how many people really wheel there DD? Really using it?
some of us have a second or third rig to off road In.

But to have a truck that you can wheel if needed and comes with a true locker or posi that you can use all they time with not push button or limit on the speed using a locker.

 

I have this. Technically both of my trucks are daily drivers, one is my personal vehicle I use for personal things and the other is my work/field truck. Sometimes they exchange roles when I need the Tacoma to get into tight or wet spots. That's why I have two trucks. I would never be silly enough to try and wheel a fullsized in the mountains.

LOL! Speaking of my Ram 2500 this truck is a joke. My LCD screen just told me it requires ABS servicing at 49K km's (~30K miles). Even better apparently my computer has disabled the 4WD and traction control until I get my ABS fixed. What a piece of shit.

Is that because of the plastic actuator gear that is painfully expensive to have fixed, but incredibly easy to do yourself?

I posted back in May. I read Car and Driver's full size pickup comparo in June and bought a Silverado in July. I wasn't sure about the twin turbos on Ford and aluminum is more expensive to repair. So I got the 327 that cuts off 4 cylinders. Best mileage so far was 23.5 but in town about 16. My 6.5" son and my grandson fit in the back seat with legroom to spare for my son. Grandson is in a car seat that hooks right in. Last time at their house we went to Home Depot and got 28 bags of mulch. My grandson didn't want to go back home so we took the long way thru the neighborhood to make him happy.

 

Love those trucks. If they weren't so expensive, I would have bought a Silverado instead of a Tacoma. With my better half finishing up a doctorate program, I had to keep a budget in mind and bought my Tacoma. I love it, but the Silverado is still the dream truck and will be next! (at least as of right now lol)

 

What else is there? I had a frontier. But traded for taco. I might go back to v6 frontier if aliens came and stole all the Tacoma's on the planet. But there is nothing I need a half ton for that my Tacoma can't handle. If it's too big for taco I just use my Sierra 2500hd 4x4 crew cab like so.

 

I like the Silverado for its look and the nicer interior. That being said, the new Tacoma has some nice upgrades that have it up to date on interior amenities (no more plastic dash!). I just hate the front end on the 16. If it gets a facelift before I'm looking to buy again, it will be on my short list.

I can agree with OP, i have a 2010 manual trans and it sucks balls. complete lack of power, worse mileage than a V6 (F150s with v8s get better mpg than me), plastic bed, radio that hasn't worked since i bought it new, cheaply built interior, and a clutch squeek that that wont go away no matter what i do. if i had to do it again, i would go with a Colorado (dont care for larger trucks) or a wrx.
actually, a 2014 WRX STI wagon will more than likely be my next ride.

 

Love the Subies! It sounds like you got a poor build. My buddy had a lemon when he bought his Tundra (2 transmissions in 30k along with other issues). They had him trade for another Tundra and he has loved this one. Except for his 9 MPG.

 

9 mpg, WTF? My F150 with a 6000 lbs trailer gets that with a 60 mph headwind

 

My thoughts exactly! Then again he has it lifted with 315's...and from what I've seen he has a lead foot.

Taco is next on my list. Keeping my fingers crossed for spring. Looking for a used 2nd gen.
