If you weren't going to get a tacoma, what would you get?

I'm going to be in the market for a new truck in the coming months and have been doing a lot of research on them. I currently own a 2007 Taco and it has been wonderful, not a single problem in the 9 years. And well it's time to move on. I've been poking around on various forums and such trying to get opinions... and well, if you go to coloradofans everyone says get a colorado and here I'm assuming everyone will say get a taco... But what if the Taco was off the table, what would you get then?

Obviously my first stop was checking out the 2016 Taco. Loved all the tech and everything seemed like exactly what I wanted... but it's not big enough inside for me. My head nearly hits the top, while I can drive it n such if I were to hit a bump going really fast then... that probably won't be fun... Took it on a test drive and didn't really love the seats either... But aside from that I love the Taco.

I then turned my attention towards the Nissan Frontier. A bit more spacious which was nice but I felt it lacked too much in the tech department, heck it doesn't even have a DIC. It also looked and felt very... dated, but not much has changed in the last few years. I hear it's do for a redesign sometime this year... but I dunno. I have not test drove this yet.

With the 2 most reliable trucks down I started looking at the Chevy Colorado. I feel like it has the most space and was pretty comfy. The tech is there too which I like a lot and that remote start doe... I feel like I'd use that a lot. But everyone seems to bash chevy reliability. I know it was redesigned last year after being gone for 3 years or so... but I'm just not sure. On one hand I hear "Take care of it and do maint regularly and anything will last", and on the other its "Don't get a chevy you'll regret it". Which has me worried since out of the 3 I like it the most. Not to mention it has the best mpg.

Anyways it has been a long post, but I'm curious to see what people have to say. Planning to test drive a bunch next weekend and even started looking at the Dodge Rebel... but it's so expensive.

My old car got totaled in June. I decided to hold out for the Tacoma, but there were a few times where I was very close to pulling the trigger on a 4Runner Trail.

A little of this and a little of that.
Tough one. If you have to stay with a mid size truck, maybe look at the new Honda.
For full size, Tundra or F-150.
I actually thought the interior of the new Tacoma was a lot more spacious than my 2011.
The lack of quality/reliability at GM & Dodge would keep me away.

    Good luck!

You could always do a short term lease on the Chevy. If you liked it, buy it.

If I wasn't waiting on the Tacoma I would have ordered another Ram 2500 diesel/manual transmission. Decided to get the Tacoma because of my commute distance. The Dodge is twice the size and cost more to maintain. Love my current Dodge diesel and my son's 2013 Dodge diesel (other than the '13 being an automatic :puke:) don't get me wrong. I just want a smoother ride and less noise for my commuter.

I looked at another 4runner but in a trd pro as opposed to the trail we have now. But I really needed a truck bed. If no tacoma I'd probably get a mega cab dually diesel ram. My biggest complaint with the Tacoma is the size. It's the smallest truck I've owned since my last toyota around 2000 or so

What a strange trolling post. If you hit a bump going really fast you might hit your head? Do you mean like 150mph over a sand dune? You watch too many MadMax movies. You own a 2007 but think the 2016 is too small so you're looking at other small trucks? Does anyone seriously feel the Colorado is larger than a Taco? If this is for real, just test drive a few full sized trucks.

I actually saw a new Jeep truck the other day, was not a huge fan. The back cab looks like it will be comparable to our Tacoma's. Hard to say, until I can get a closer look, not while just at a stop light on my bike. Saw the new Titan too. I've been wanting to check that out with the diesel configuration. Didn't look horrible either. If your looking for more room, why not consider a full size option like the Tundra, or Ford as previously mentioned?

Tundra is a great truck. Really don't know why anyone goes domestic unless the require the size or towing capacity of the 3500 series trucks. I don't know anyone with a ford or dodge that hasn't had a laundry list of issues with them.

Yep, why I got rid of my Dodge Ram. I might consider again, but only if I'm getting one with the Cummins lol. More than likely though, nope lol.

Was it a moonroof truck that you were hitting your head on? I'm 6'3" with a medium torso height (according to my Osprey backpack) and i couldn't sit up straight in a moonroof taco. My 16 does not have the moonroof and i have maybe 1/8" less head room than my 06 did, still about 1.5" of room there.

The Frontier has a nice ride. However, it is lacking in a few areas. The overall feel is old, the tech needs updated. I looked at a frontier and the guy was trying to tell me about the Nissan connect app. He was stumbling around and then I asked him if he uses it, he says no, I don't drive a Nissan. I would say it depends on your needs and how soon you want to buy. If you can wait and see if Nissan updates, then do so. If a full size would suit you, Tundra first, then F150.

Tundra doesn't come with a manual transmission... Sorry Toyota not buying a truck with out a clutch pedal.

Brave post. Good question. I drove every truck on the market before deciding on my TRD OR. I wanted off-road ability and was willing to trade off size and refinement to get there but this isn't my only vehicle. The unanimous trade rag consensus is the GM twins. More power, car like ride, handsome design and more rigid. Not my opinion, theirs. If you favor slightly more space and a car like ride I'd go there. If I were buying again I would go full size. Biggest advantage for the taco is quality reputation and interior fit and finish for me..
