I used the black/white as my hot, but I just grounded on a ground nut. Do i have to use the black wire as my ground for it to work properly?

And just so I'm clear on this the on/off you refer to is when you are using the switch at the dome light and not merely opening & closing the door, correct?

I got it figured out. You have to use the black/white for the hot and you HAVE to use the solid black for ground. (I was using a separate ground nut)

Ok, so it is a dedicated switched ground wire up there as well....the color code/combination for the wire exiting the pin switch at the door jamb/hinge is red w/white stripe.Weird, but I used the red/white wire to perform the same function in my mod

here's the result. my timer is set to turn the light ring off after an hour, it only draws about a third of an amp when it is on....just like my old Celica!

1/3 an amp is a lot just for a timed LED for what it's worth...

For nearly the same price you could cut that down to <80ma and make the light do fun stuff with a 556 timer or even ATTINY85 if you wanted to make pulsing/flashing patterns.

Nifty idea though, I like it. Maybe put a photoresistor in there so it only activates below a certain threshold and stays on throughout the entire night if you can cut the consumption down (not as if 350ma is that bad for a car battery).

    Just my .02 =)

Ps. I would like to go ahead and place blame on you for what I'm going to do.

I'll try to get some video up when I have a chance to do it.

    No spoilers though ;)

Ya, it's probably not over a 10th of an amp but I was posting it in a hurry,It's got 3 smd leds mounted on a pcb, as for a light show version I'm easily distracted by shiny objects so this is as "crazy" as my mod will get...;)
    Edited to add-
Oh right...and the relay/timer consumes about 10-20 ma at rest (24-7) and about 60-100 ma when it's working, I forgot about that.....

Can someone verify the LED size that you guys are using to do this mod? My gut tells me 74 but I just wanted to double check

Eh, see my Build Thread sig link. Too many mods to list.
A year later and I found a '97 Camry light ring on eBay. It fits around the ignition cylinder just fine, but the existing black bezel won't fit over it. So I just eBayed a '97 Camry bezel too and will hope for the best.

I'm still trying to decided where I want to wire it to.

I might wire this into the dash illumination dimmer circuit, but that would have it on all of the time when driving at night. I'll have to think about that one.

I'm also going to replace the green bulb with a red LED to match the rest of my dash LEDs. I'll report back with which one when I get the right LED.

FWIW I just removed the original bezel trimmed off the tabs that originally held it to the dash then used a grinding tool to enlarge it to fit....once all was fitted I just zapped it to the dash with Krazy glue, can't tell it from stock:cool:

I'll keep that in mind, depending on the outcome of the Camry bezel upon arrival.

Tie it into your dome light so it comes on when you open the door and fades out after a minute or once the key is turned. Looks gid

Dome lights don't fade on 95-97...otherwise that'd be a contender.

Well, a '97 Camry light ring and bezel piece fits a '97 Tacoma perfectly. Sweet!

I also ordered an LED from superbrightleds.com that should fit. I'll update with the LED part number once it arrives and is verified working.

    Very nice!What colour led?
Edited to add; I like Superbright's products & would like to buy from them instead of China/Ebay but they (& some of the other vendors) charge a gazillion dollars to ship up here....
