I'm not real happy with the 6spd manual trans.

I was driving along on a normal day, down a normal road, and disaster happened. I took off from a stop and shifted to 2nd, then to 3rd, and then to 4th, but my trans was still in 3rd!! The shifter moved around like there was nothing there!! Truck has 97k on it and the trans is broken! I am a tech at a Toyota dealer, so I limped into the dealer and removed the trans and disassembled it. I was surprised to find the bolt that holds my shift/ select lever to the main shift shaft had fallen out and also had a broken 1-2 shift fork, which is called the #3 fork in the parts catalog!! This is crazy because I hadn't driven the truck THAT hard in the 3 months that I've owned it. The previous owner must have driven the CRAP out of it is all I know. After doing some research, I've found that this is actually kind of common in the RA60F trans. I ordered the parts and will see how it goes when they come in and I'm back on the road again. I just thought I'd share this for you guys and gals.

Man that sucks !! On the bright side you are able to fix it yourself. Imagine what it would cost the avg person to have this done. Good luck with the repair.

Do you think this happened because of the extra power of your supercharger?

I have owned my 2014 6 speed for a few months now, and I am happy enough with it. I wish the rpms were a bit lower in 6th on the highway, but it drives nice enough. I really hope I don't have any durability issues down the road.

I have never heard of it being a common problem :notsure:

Sounds to me like you bought someone else's problem and supercharged it.

Yeah, I've never heard of this happening before. Who knows how the previous owner treated it. Lots of people are rough on manual transmissions.

I looked all over the web and have seen others complaining about it hanging in gear and breaking the #3 fork. I have to agree with 58 Siesta, as far as getting someone else's problem. CGM, I don't think the supercharger had anything to do with it. The reason why is because it didn't just explode and rip teeth off or anything like that. It's evident that the bolt just worked loose and fell out. The broken fork is prolly due to some hard shifts over its lifetime. The fork didn't really give any problems because it's just broken at the end or corner so it still functions properly. All in all, it just sucks since I've only had it maybe 3 months. Lol!!

image.jpgThe little broken piece is end of the fork. The bolt is what fell out of the shift shaft. The roller with the spring is what gives u the resistance u feel when u move the shifter side to side.

Is this an opportune time to put in the TRD short throw shifter upgrade? :D

Plenty of members on XRU have reported transmission issues, with the manual. From bearing coming apart, to gears stripping, shifter arm bushings going bad, and forks bending or breaking.

This doesn't include oem clutch issues.

How long did the repair take you? Did you see anything else that was worrisome when you took your tranny apart?

I would think those are more from "jamming gears"...

    After all it is XRU.
