what is a good brand for the basic mechanic? some say it doesn't matter as long as you are using impact and not regular sockets. Gearwrench looks like a good deal with lifetime warranty.

Yep. Or Kobalt, they have a lifetime warranty. If they break, walk them into any Lowe's, receipt or not, and get a new socket.

Harbor Freight also has a lifetime warranty.

I'm slowly changing over to Kobalt from Craftsman, as Sears is starting to go out of business (at least in N AL). :annoyed:

Craftsman line will be picked up by Black and Decker I think. Not sure what that means for broken tool exchanges though?

OP, never forget to check out local pawn shops and even eBay. Some great deals on good stuff can be found on both if your timing is right.

If I order something from Sears and request store pickup to avoid shipping, it gets sent to the nearest Kmart. o_O

KMart bought Sears in 2005. So they are dying together.

And I think Ace is carrying Craftsman too.

Just read this AM that Sears will still sell Craftsman after Stanley buys the brand.

Decided to try gearwrench, bought a couple of sets on eBay for a good price. They look like they will hold up just fine.

Fastenal also carries the Gearwrench line FYI.

They carry the APEX line, and I've used them to warranty an Armstrong ratchet.
