I just bought this truck about 3 weeks ago with 122k miles I'm going by Chris4x4's tut here http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/technical-chat/24545-changing-differential-fluid-step-step-how.html

Problem is I was expect to drain out about 3 quarts but only drained half a gallon, in the tut mentioned above it calls to refill with 3 quarts what should I do am I missing something?

UPDATE: Ended up puttin it on a downward incline to pour the 3rd quart in ill know that I fucked up because either it will start leaking or one of you will tell me so

So far took it for a drive and all seems good also I changed the spark plugs and cleaned the throttle body tomorrow ill be installing my new bull bar, I know gaaaaayyy, shit I like how it looks on other tacos so I'm going for it

    stock, for now
so you drained 2 quarts, and the manual says to refill with 3?

You need to take into consideration that the fluid runs down the axle tube. IF you want, jack the truck up on each side, one side at a time, and see if you can get the extra quart out.

Low factory fills are not uncommon, unfortunately.

    Potato Potahto.

Truth be told though, my '09 doesn't like to be overfilled. If I do, the pinion seal leaks out the excess until it's down to about that 5mm level, then it stops seeping.

That extra bit won't hurt anything though. Just could get messy.

Nah. Breather's fine, I checked it, and it only does it when overfull, then stops completely. I have a new seal and pinion nut, but I'm waiting for it to be worth the trouble to do anything about it. Right now it's not enough of a problem to care.

The seal is brand new (the diff was rebuilt this past June), and while it's possible ECGS screwed up seating the seal, again, it's not enough to matter at the moment.

Can't get any simpler. Fill it until it starts spilling out.
