Anyone attempting should poke their head underneath the bed to look at the bolt, if it looks like this, you will have a long day and may need to visit a mechanic like I did to heat the bolt washer to remove it....

How important is it on this mod to have the bolts properly torqued after installing the rings? I'm assuming these boots are there to secure the bed to the frame. Might it do damage if they are over torqued or pose a safety hazard if undertorqued? I don't have fancy tools so I'd just be torquing it by hand. Or should I find a garage and have them torqued to spec?

I've wondered why people are cutting giant holes. I like your approach.

I'm glad you like the "slot" method. Several others in the thread had the same idea. I bought my own Craftsman microtork torque wrench just for this mod. It was $70 a little over 5 years ago. Nice tool to have around when needed.

    Quick question,
I see that the owners with short beds don't seem to have the silver colored tie downs towards the front that are on the side of the bed
as we long bed owners do.

I have four of the Chrysler d-rings and am thinking of using two in the middle of the bed as normal and then replacing the
two towards the rear of the bed. Instead of the fronts...

Since these are using the bed to frame bolts might the rear ones be stronger than the factory black ones Toyota has back there?

SO after trying to speak to the dealer that I got my original 4 from, they can't get me any more without
pulling teeth it seems. SO I stopped by another dealer closer to home and they were trying to quote me a 30-45
charge for freight. I was like but they are really small and not that heavy. Lol... Part of me think they knew I drove in
in a Toyota and they just didn't want to deal with me. :boink:

Ended up getting them online for barely over 20 bucks for two more shipped.

Installed the four I had. Man if I knew they were going to be this useful, I would have installed them sooner.
I believe I have had the original four for over a year and a half now...:censored:

Went ahead and placed two in the rear most area near the factory originals. Figured why not. They are stronger.
Just waiting for the two in the front and I'll trim up my bed mat.

I have more pics that may make it into a mod or build thread of my own. I don't think I qualify as a "builder" but I like to tinker
with the best of them and have some IMHO great small mods to my truck.

    Same as everybody else...
Ordered two just now from armysurpluswarehose.com, can't wait to do this mod next week. I see these drings on Humvees all day long, not sure why it never dawned on me to try them on the Taco. They are strong, not cheaply made...

see build...but not a whole lot
Did this today. The bolts didn't play nice at first so I used an impact and they came out.

I bought those. Had to drill out holes a bit for bolt to fit. Just used a hand drill in a vise. Used oil to keep drill bit cool. was a bit of work but a lot better price than Toyota oem.

It says the mounting holes are 5/16, the bolts that are used in the bed to hold them there are 1/2. So no wouldn't work without drilling.

I finished up my Chrystler D-Rings, got the last two installed, 6-total.

Then cut holes in my bed mat. I'm so stinking OCD I am resisting buying another bed mat and doing it all over again but cleaner. See originally I decided the d-rings should sit flat, so had a rough idea and cut the first one. Accidentally over cut the rear one so just trimmed all the way to the edge of the bed. Then I realized I could actually fold the rings over some to help keep the mat in place but let's be honest the mat doesn't move hardly at all.

They will be fine. They are stout as all get out and fold flat when needed. Best part no grinding or drilling. Just a BFH and a large socket!

Somehow my 2011 AC long bed got out of the factory with NO forward tie downs. Seems most of the trucks I see have the square galvanized brackets on the wall of the bed. Not mine. So I ordered the Toyota D-rings. I was a bit concerned about getting the bolts out after 4 midwest winters. Put some liqid wrench on from above AND below. The passenger side one in particular gave me a fight, but they both came out with out stripping the bolts or the tools. You can see a fair amount rust.

Took care of the ridges on a pedestal grinder, bought a couple of extra M12 washers, painted everything with a rustproofing primer followed by a flat black, and put 'em back in. Simple, cheap, practical and functional mod.
