Weathertechs, personally fabricated tailgate lock, tint, extra D rings, Exactfit seatcovers, re-enforcing the tailgate and adding a leaf next week.
Does anyone know the specified torque on the bolts? I will be doing this tomorrow, and realized I should probably tighten these things to specifications.

Thanks. Big difference there. It makes sense, though. The automation at the factories I have worked in always seem to have a hard time with torque consistency. I don't guess it really matters.

Exactly right! Common sense just isn't so common anymore.
Army surplus drings rated to 2400 lb breaking strength, and 800 lb working load.
    Great Mod!

I installed my two front OEM D-rings under the bed bolt location saturday. It all turned out okay. Bed bolts were not that tight from the factory. Truck is brand new with 1500 miles on it so far. I re-torqued all of them at 55 ft. lbs. One was already at that. I am on the fence about adding the two in the middle. It was raining when I finished so I could not load my dirtbike to see if indeed I will need the two middle ones. I started to install the front ones per the factory recommendations but opted out of that after examining the bed in that area. Seemed really thin and flimsy to me. For the ones concerned about the bed bolt method rest easy there is no way you could pull one of those bolts loose or break one.

Nice mod thanks to all who have done this before me. The input was very helpful.

slight deviation from topic - for those of you who mention carrying motorcycles, are you loading bikes over the tailgate, or removing the tailgate and loading right into the bed? I've seen mention of weak tailgates, mine's a 2010 so not sure if that's been fixed, and it's unclear to me what the weight limit of the tailgate is... I rarely carry my bikes but want to be sure that if the situation arises, I can haul my 600 lb bike without bending my truck!

I rarely haul a motorcycle now that I have a two rail trailer but I will be putting a dirtbike in the back from time to time. Don't plan any sportbikes or streetbikes in the back they will go on the trailer. I did it all the time with my '02 Prerunner which had a weak tailgate also. I use an aluminum ramp and rode the dirtbike up in the back not sure I can get away with that on the shortbed DC. Either way I plan on puttign it straight in and rear wheel on the tailgate. It can't be over 100 lbs on it and surely it'll hold that. Like I said I had streetbikes in over the tailgate on my '02 and it never broke.

    Thanks Roy,

I had to haul my 600lb dual-sport in my '00 Pre-runner once, also hauled my wife's ~400lb bike a few times - no problems. I'm just worried about the 2nd gen. tailgate, heard alot of stories of bent gates...

Yes I am also worried about even putting a dirtbike over the tailgate on this truck after reading the bending in the middle that happens. I may get more use out of my trailer from now on looks like. I have a 400 Super Motard I would like to haul in the back instead of on a trailer looks like that might be dicey as well. Kinda wish now I had bought another extended cab truck verses this Double cab model.:( At least the weight would be more on the bed when hauling instead of on the tailgate.

Just got my D-rings in the mail, can't wait to get 'em installed! Just gotta pick up an impact wrench and the appropriate size Torx bit (insert Tim Taylor-style grunting noises) :D I love tools...

Gringo- I have a 2010 also, and I'm 99% certain that they fixed the tailgate problem. I've had 2x 225 pound people sit on mine, and it didn't hurt a thing. Hope this helps.

I've loaded my 250-lb dirt bike ('07 KTM 400 XCW) and my 380-lb street bike ('03 Suzuki SV650) in my '09 Tacoma many times using a ramp on the center of tailgate. No problems so far - but I wouldn't trust it with a real heavy bike. From what I've read, they strengthened the tailgate in '09, but it's still pretty weak. You can feel it flex around when you walk on it. It's pathetic, really. There's a thread on here somewhere about a guy who folded his tailgate in the center when loading his Harley-Davidson touring bike (probably around 800-lbs). I think he straightened it himself and then welded in some reinforcement to make it much stronger.

Just curious, Gringo... what "dual-sport" bike do you ride that weighs 600 lbs??? The BMW R1200GS is the largest bike I can think of that can remotely be considered a "dual-sport" (and I certainly wouldn't take it on any serious off-road) and BMW claims it weighs just over 500-lbs wet. 600-lbs would be a LOT to handle off-road!

I've got a BMW R1150GS that's ~600lbs with a full tank, I use it as a two-up touring packmule; no extensive offroading with that bike, just hunting for free campsites. My daily ride is an old R100 GSPD that's alot more fun on gravel roads.

I rarely haul a bike but want to know I can do it without hurting the truck...

Just finished the mod. Love it. Easy as hell.

For anyone out there who has yet to do this, there's something out there called a Uni-Bit that makes enlarging the holes in the D-rings wayyy easier. Pick one up, you'll find lots of other uses for it. Lowe's, HD, Menards, wherever.

Gringo- sounds to me like you should be able to load your bike w/o problems. You might be a little nervous hauling the bike the first time or 2, but as long as you use good ratchet straps and do it right your truck'll hold it. I know, pretty basic info :)

I love the image that pops into my head when you call your GS a packmule. I plan on doing a bit of light enduro riding on my R1200R this next summer. My biggest concern is the non-disconnectable ABS; sure makes the hill descents more nerve racking.

Awesome Suggestion. I don't have a bed mat, but rest assured when I get one I'll do the same.
Nice work on the D-ring install. I have a pair to install, but hesitant to relocate above the wheel well where the short bed meets the back wall.

Great site you guys have here. A lot of information for new tacoma owners. I just installed extra d-rings following suggestions in this thread. Probably the easiest mod :) Thank you!
