I was down in San Diego Wednesday and figure I would pay a visit to Downsouth Motorsports. Got around to talking with Marco about my rear suspension feeling like $hit. I was running TSB w/ Wheelers 1.5" AAL and stock TRD shocks. He recommended the extended travel 5100's because most likely my shock was topping out here and there.

Got around to installing it today and damn these things are long;). The line on the OEM shocks are where the dust boot was sitting when installed on the truck. So I had about 2" of down travel.

In the pic below you can see where each shock tube actually ends and the the difference between them.

Actual installation wasn't to bad. I ended up using the OEM jack out of my Matrix to help get the shock into place. I didn't have enough to muscle it up.

Once installed I took some measurements to see how much up travel I will have and if I will need to extend my bump stops. Looks like I have 4.5" of up travel. And my bumpstop are 4.75" away from the frame. I will most likely end up welding a .5" plate to the frame to keep the shock from bottoming out.

Next is to figure out what kind of modifications need to be made for the down travel. Some folks say that the brake line brackets need to be bent. What about the differential electrical wires? Are they long enough.

Is it better to have more down travel vs. up travel?

Thanks again to Marco at DSM for showing me the differences in the two 5100's.

if you wheel what you really want is more bump than droop...well at least for higher speed wheeling.

also...:spy: this is bad advice BUT Bilstein does have a "lifetime" warranty so...i wouldnt worry about setting up the bumps, just use the shock and if something goes out warranty it :spy:

^this is bad advise lol, dont listen to him

Your leafs wont have enough droop to use the entire down stroke of the shock but that's ok. I'd un-bolt the bottom of the shocks again and let the leafs flex to full droop and double check the break lines. The shocks will then be sitting next to the bottom mounts and both will be at full droop, you'll see what I mean......when I had those leafs they drooped to 25" and that shock goes to 27" and change.

Is this the shock that is recommended to use with the Dakar leaf pack on 2nd Gens?

    how do you like it?

Im wanting to install OME dakar leafs and use the B110 but I want to make sure that it will work out.

    I can tell you this......

Right now I have the Dakar leaf pack installed and am running standard length Bilstein 5100's. I'm pretty sure they are the limiting factor in my down travel. I was informed that these are not ideal and I'll eventually blow them if I go wheeling or go over bumps quickly. They seem to be fine for paved roads though.

Not Dakars, but I ran them on my "stormtrooper" build with a 4" leaf pack and they worked wonderfully.

I've been running them with my Dakars and AAL for about 30k miles now. These are so much better than my old OME rear shocks. Here's a picture of the droop I get with them.

Absolutely! Very cost efficient and I think for your needs they'll be perfect. I'm very similar in my exploring/wheeling as you are and they never let me down.

I wish I could like your post more than once! That looks really good. Yes I have the too-short OME shock as well and want to get rid of it. I need to put on my extended brake lines that have been collecting dust for 8 months and get 'er done.

Yes very cost efficient. I like that. :D

Haha thanks! I ended up going with these basically because they were super cheap and had the travel I was looking for. Wasn't expecting the best of quality based in the price but these have blown me away. I pretty much do overlanding and go explore some trails locally so these have been awesome for me. I did the extended brake lines when I put the AAL in the rear about 40k miles ago. Only thing I don't like is that the E-brake cable is pretty tight at full droop.

Good to hear all of that... On the e-brake too tight issue, I've seen that most with those that do the shackle flip kits. I recently asked Spencer (ragincajun35) that question as he just flipped his shackle on his 2015.

He says he solved it, check here in his build thread, for the start of the dialog. Might be useful...

See I thought I had done that. I just went and looked but like a ding dong I removed the bracket that Spencer left on and left the bracket that he removed. I'll have to get out there and take off the last 2 brackets then I should be good to go. Just hope that it doesn't hang down too low since I don't have the two top brackets any more.

:D Interesting. Maybe take the remaining bracket, unbolt it slide up the cable and reattach where the higher one once was? :notsure: Thanks for the additional pics.
