Installing Bed Extender

    I am trying to install a bed extender in a 2013 Tacoma. Everything has gone well until I got to installing the left and right stanchions. I am having difficulty getting the thinner wedges into the stachions. The instructions say to move the right center stanchion over the right tube by tappng with a rubber mallet....if I am reading this right....the stanchion is to go on the "main" frames of the bed extender ?? How does this prevent the center tubes from coming apart ?? I am confused. Any suggestions? Thanks.
