I have an aftermarket part that I want to put in my dash. It is 12V. I would like to use the wiring from my ash tray light to run this thing, if that's even possible. I've included a crude wiring diagram and two pictures of the part and it's connection plus a picture of the wiring from the truck I want to connect.

I'd like to do this correctly, so I'm putting this out there to those with experience. I'm hoping you can give me some good instructions to follow to install this part since I don't know shit about automobile electronics.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

What accessory is it? The light bulb is 12v and ground so you can connect it to basically anything.

Let me guess: judging by that Toyota looking 12v stamp on the back it's a Hilux Surf or Tercel Inclinometer? That wiring diagram looks familiar.

If you can find the wiring diagram for your accessory I can help you wire it up. I can't tell what wire does what from the diagram you provided.

You're right, it's an inclinometer/digital clock from an FJ60 Land Cruiser. The guy I bought it from provided a crude wiring diagram but I'll see if I can find something official.

I knew it. I was just looking at Toyota inclinometers the other day and I recognized that 12v stamp on the plastic. Can you take a pic of the front?

    Okay should be very easy.

Green 1/2: I THINK These power the backlighting in the inclinomter - why there are 2 wires I have no idea. (Maybe 1 for each bulb in each gauge) My best guess is that your 12v switched ignition power source would turn them on, maybe not.
If each wire powers one backlight bulb, then you will need to splice these two wires to the positive on your cigarette lighter lightbulb wire - the backlight will turn on when the running lights or headlights are on.

Blue: Splice into a 12v power source that is only on with the truck is in ACC - you should be fine splicing into the power outlet circuit

Red: Splice into a 12v power source that constantly has power no matter if the truck is on or off - this will keep the clock from losing the right timing. You can use a fuse tap or splice into a constant 12v wire on the radio harness.

Black/Green: This is your ground, you can ground it to a bolt on any bare metal surface or splice into the power outlet ground.

Scratch that, I didn't realize you have more than one wire terminating at the spade connectors. Give me a minute to re-identify the wires.

Yes, green from backlight and black from clock into one spade connector, green from backlight and green from clock into another spade connector. Red from clock into it's own connector and blue from clock into it's own.

Only one bulb in the inclinometer backlight, I actually took it apart to clean it up a little. The springs on the knobs sounded terrible and it was a little dirty so the best picture I got for you now is this:

So you have two wires going into that one lightblub? I was thinking each gauge would have it's own backlight.

Nope one bulb in that connection you see in the back of the unit. But one of the green wires is going into the spade connector with the black from the clock so.....ground I assume?

You're right - looks like it'll be ground if it goes to the bulb socket. I don't know why Toyota made the wire the same color. Let me draw up a diagram give me a minute.

Can you confirm the two green wires goes into the bulb socket?

Confirmed, both go into bulb socket, picture below and for shits and giggles here's pictures of the inclinometer device:

Can you test which wire on the cigarette lighter bulb has positive 12v? You will need to wire that to the backlight on the inclinometer.

I can, it wouldn't be tonight but I can test it and let you know. I really appreciate you jumping in on this. I'll tag you when I have that answer.

No problem. Also test one of the power outlets and tell me which wire has positive and which wire is ground, you'll need to splice into that as well for ACC/IGN 12v power.

Here's the diagram so far. Once you identify the wire colors for the power outlets and the ashtray bulb positives I can refine it more.
