I've had this same problem as well on my 2010. Happens about once a month since the day I got it. I will probably just mention it to the dealership next time I am in there. It is very frustrating.

My 07 had that issue the first week I owned it...took it in and after the tsb was performed it hasn't happened since.

My 07 does it. The first couple times where when it got cold so I assumed it was due to the weather. Now it doesn't care about the temp. I was thinking about swapping out the plugs to see if that helps before I let the dealer touch it.

UPDATE: I was having this problem. From what I heard in another thread, it takes a second for it to sense the chip in the key after you put it in the ignition. If it doesn't sense the chip in the key, the fuel pump is shut down.

So basically don't stick the key in and instantly turn it. Wait a second. I've gotten into the habit of getting in the truck, putting the key in the ignition, fastening my seatbelt, and then starting it. I haven't had the problem since.

    enough to get me there
Happens to me only when my car stalls out. I have a manual tranny. And it happens only when I try start right after my truck stalls out. It's frustrating when it happens, but doesn't happen very often.

Bump. My 2011 is exhibiting this problem. What about any other '11 owners?

Happened ~5 times already w/ <8K miles on the truck. I've tried leaving the key in the ON position for about 3 seconds to let the computer recognize the key and the fuel pump build up pressure, but it doesn't fix the problem. Guess the TSB is the next course of action. Yippie.

thats generally a fuel delivery problem. alot of our chrysler jeep and dodge cars have that.its always the fuel pump or pressure regulator. pressure bleeds down over night so when u go to crank it the pump cant make enough pressure... so ya turn it off and back on,which re primes the system and gets the pressure back up to where it needs to be. just a possiblity

My new 2011 DC Sport (less than 3k miles on it) is also exhibiting the same (and very intermittent) problem. When it does happen, it will fire right up on the second attempt EVERY TIME.

Took it into the dealer who said, of course, that the "computer" didn't find any trouble codes, so everything must be fine and that the truck was operating "within normal characteristics." The advisor did say the previous TSB could be extended to later model years if enough 2011's are brought in for the problem, but that it unfortunately does not apply at this time.

FWIW, I did find that the ground connection from the battery to the chassis was not very tight.... tightened it up myself in a few seconds. I doubt that's the cause in this case, but it can't hurt.

As a side bar, I LOVE my truck, but this sort of silliness is slowly starting me to question Toyota's committment to their build quality.

My 2010 does this only when it is cold out... I took it back to the dealership last winter and they said that they didn't notice any problems.

It is definitely intermittent... but still pisses me off on a new truck

I dnt have time to read the whole thread but don't forget you can't just turn the key all the way over guys.... go to RUN. Wait a second for the fuel to prime THEN start.

Mines done it about 4X since I bought it...I chalked it up to insufficient fuel pressure at the rail as it fires up every time on the second attempt. When mine does it, it cranks for an abnormally long time, starts/stumbles then dies out within less than 1 second. Is this what is being referred to here?

The problem only happens once in a great while, fuel type and temperature (of engine or atmospheric) doesn't seem consistent to give it to a dealer with any valid information...also, no stored codes for the stalling:mad:

Yep, same issue I bumped the thread for. I was just wondering if any other 2011's were having the same problem that can be attributed to the TSB mention earlier in the thread. It appears they are, but Toyota isn't willing to own up to any model years post 2007.

That may work but but you shouldn't have to do that on these trucks. My problem back in 07 was it wouldn't start alot of times unless I pumped the gas pedal first. After getting the ECM recalibrated via the tsb the problem went away completely...now I just turn the key and it starts right up everytime.

It’s been about a year since I had the TSB done for the excessive cranking and it just started doing it again about 3 weeks ago. It always starts right up the second time but I hate when it happens anyway. First time it happened was about 2 weeks after I bought it, drove over to a buddy’s house and he was checking it out. As I was getting ready to leave I turned the key and it just cranked and cranked . I was like oh shit. Dealer wants to try to duplicate it so they can diagnose it but it is so speratic that it would be a waste of time to start it and shut it off over and over again.

Digging this thread up. I have the same problem on my 14. It has done it a few times since I bought it new. Today was the worst, long crank followed by start and stumble until stall. Has anyone remedied this? I work out of town and get nervous every time it fails to start. No codes.

My 06 hasn't done it in a long time but sucks when it happens. The good thing is in the end it has always started. Still sucks but it is what it is I guess
