Is ‘learning’ lifelong on the Taco AT or a one time thing??

Ok......here is my opinion.....I believe the transmission/engine combo is constantly learning, and the whole “drive it like you stole it for the first six months” is basically B.S. because the truck is continuously adapting to your driving habits, altitude, and fuel quality, though not in the short term, over a longer ‘window’ of time. I think this is why the tuners have struggled to defeat the ‘learning’ as it is an ongoing process, not a single set of data that becomes etched in stone in the ECU after X number of days.

I’m am open to being wrong about this, but if you think about it, it would be stupid to have a system that “learns” your driving habits once, but when you sell the truck to the next guy, it’s all Fubar for him.

My main point is I don’t think anything you do in the first sixth months of ownership will have any long-term effect on the drivability of the vehicle, other than breaking in the transmission. The truck will adapt to your driving habits, and if they change over time, it will change with you.

But this is all a guess.......does anyone know the actual facts from Toyota?

Changes constantly, you can reset it back to zero but it drives like junk for a few days. I only reset Toyota trans after major repairs or as a diagnostic attempt. I never do it as a maintenance process.

These trans aren't as complicated as perceived. Dual clutch trans require more attention, and sport trans on GTR's and 911's have special calibrations that are required.

I am one of the few (or silent majority) that has no problem with the AT. I’ve just always wondered about this point when I read things like “be sure to floor it for the first six months”......”run ECT for the first six months”.....”chirp the tires for the first six months”........none of that made sense to me.

I had the tsb done and the recall on the diff. 38 days to replace the carrier. The truck ran great after that. Now about 6 months later it's back to hesitating and flaring (high revs). I am not sure what this schizophrenic truck.

It does "learn" constantly, but in very limited parameters. Remember the algorythm is driven by efficiency so it takes your inputs and makes them as efficient as possible.

I drove mine like an old lady for the purpose of breaking the motor in. I don't mind the AT too much. My opinion is if the throttle was a little more responsive, it wouldn't be as bad.

I agree with [OP] on this, the suggestions to "floor it for the first six months" were just analogies to "have fun" with it! Sooooo.....havin fun with it!

It’s like the truck doesn’t really want to learn your habits. It’s a bad pupil. You should punish it.

I’m at 7 months. It’s had no TSB’s performed on it.

I added a quart of fluid at 200 miles.

During the first 1,000 miles there was a lot of clunking, thunking and surging. After 1000 miles it started feeling like a different, new and better transmission with smoother response and better shifting with fewer clunks and surges.

After 2,500 miles it was running great with very minor, almost imperceptible surges and no more clunking. It’s not perfect, but seems to be getting there.

100% yes. Biggest smile on my face and still to this day. Of course putting more money in to get ovtune is the best way to go. Even though its a placebo, the effects are real and you wont regret it. Dint know one person who does, and will not go back to driving stock.

On the real though, this gives me the confidence to pass on highway at higheay speeds, or merge into fast traffic without fearing that mashing the pedal will not give me enough throttle fast enough

I drove a dodge ram tental that had the low power that the taco didnt. The sprintbooster effectively gave me the low end power. Its more natural to just move your foot slightly to get to speed insteaf of having to mash the gas pedal all the time. Mpgs is negligable and may even be better depending how you drive

Will the sprint booster work with the ovtune? Hate to spend 300 then down the road cough up 700 and throw out 300....sounds like both are good, maybe better with both!

I’ve driven my truck in “S” mode since I bought it in September last year. Haven’t had any issues really. Leave it in 6th & let it do its thing. Unless I’m in the mood to switch gears
