I need to run this by the people who know - you guys.

I am going to buy (if the consensus comes back in my favor) these new wheels from Method Racing.

18 x 9 with a 4.75 back space (-12mm Offset). I want to wrap them in 285/60/18 Cooper Zeon LTZ tires.

I have read just about every thread on here regarding 285 tires and 4.5" back space. My issue is does anyone think that having a back space of 4.75 will cause me to curse too much in front of my kids. I know the new Cooper tires are about a 32" tall tire which isn't the problem. It is a 9" wide rim and the 285 width on a wheel that isn't 4.5" back space.......i know i will have a little trimming to do.

I have ordered 5100's for the front and plan on the 1.85 setting.

Does anyone think it will be a deal breaker.

(i really like the Cooper Zeon LTZ tires but they don't come in a 265 for an 18" rim and the 285's are really cheap right now)

    Thanks in advance guys!

    shouldn't be a problem

The other thing - someone please correct my math.

    My current stock set-up - 245/75/16 (9.8" x 30.5") and i believe 5.5" backspace 7.5" wheel.

    My new is 285/60/18 (11.43 x 31.48) on a 9" rim with 4.75" back space

so..... the back space moves the rim out 3/4" + 1 1/2 for the larger tire size means that my tire will stick out 2 1/4 inches farther that it currently does?

I'm gonna try to set the record for most posts in my own thread....

........back to the question at hand, i must be missing something in my calculation because everyone seems to run 285's and they don't seem to stick out over 2".

The difference in the diameter of the tire is 1.63". You have to divide this by two (0.815), because only half of the difference will be on the outer edge of the tire, the other 0.815 will be on the inside edge of the tire.

Add that to your backspacing difference of 0.75 and you get around 1.565"
further that the tires will stick out.

Excuse my square tires, but I believe this is how things are going to sit if I understand how backspacing is (which I may be completely wrong).

So, overall, it looks to be about 2.5" out.

As far as there being rubbing, most people running 285 width tires will be running 285/75R16, which are about over an inch taller than your 285/60R18's. I honestly dont know if you'll have rubbing.

Red is the old and Blue is the new based on your given dimensions of wheels and backspacing.

Not exact by any means, but 10px equals about 1"
