Is a bigger oil filter, (like Napa Gold 1515) better for the engine's life????

Today, My 2001 Coma hit 200,000 miles, with only very minor seepage under the truck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2.4 2WD, I got it at 185000 miles and no maintenance history.

My 1985 2.4 2wd hit 424,000 with a lot of maintenance, modification and abuse.

During my prior truck's life, I tried a Napa Gold 1515 filter, because it was designed to fit a v8, so it was about twice as long as the stock filter and twice as wide.

My original reasoning was that with 4-5 times as much filtration area, that has to be good for the engine.

Recently, ordering parts for the 2001 Coma, I had a parts guy tell me that the itty bitty filter was designed by Toyota and was all that it needed and that more filtration was a waste.

Almost all oil filters have a "bypass" valve that allows the oil to "bypass", or skip the filter and go directly to the engine, unfiltered, so if there are bits of gasket, or carbon, or bearing, or any other trash, ALL OF THE OIL is not going to get filtered and that trash will eventually go through the bearings.

Typically, nearly all filters have the bypass oil pressure set between 15 and 20 pounds. All of our engines run at least 2 or 3 times that pressure, so we are not filtering all of the oil all of the time.

How would you like to have the air filter only filter the first 20% of the air and let the induction system pull 80 % of the unfiltered air into the engine???

Using the air filter analogy a bit more, what if your air filter was quite small and got filled up with dirt and dust very quickly and allowed almost all of the air to go unfiltered??

So, I am advocating BIG oil filters, to do a better job of cleaning the oil.

While I am ranting on oil filters, I would like to advocate for QUALITY filters.

I have not seen test data for Toyota Filters, but there some good names out there that high end manufacturers spec as OE, or OE equivalent, like Porsche and Mann filters, Ferrari and Baldwin. BTW, Baldwin is used by a lot of big trucks and industrial equipment

Surprisingly, some well known filter manufacturers produce S**T. I have first hand experience with a fram filter collapsing and cutting oil pressure in half, (will post pics if you're interested).
A Baldwin fixed the oil pressure problem. If the car didn't have an oil pressure gauge, I would have never known that the engine was running on half the oil pressure. Something to think about.

Anyone got experience with a bigger Mann or Baldwin filter for the 4 bangers???

Or larger filters with higher bypass pressures???

    thanks,
    chris
