Is a cab mount chop necessary? any issues in the long run if you don't?

Hello everyone. I hope this isn't a stupid question. I'm new to all this, so please be kind. I just recently got my 2018 Tacoma from the shop. I like the look of my wheels and tires but the stance wasn't as aggressive as I would have liked. The tires were tucked evenly under the wheel well. The wheels are a 17x9 6x5.5 with 5.394 of backspace and +10mm of offset. Tires are 275/70/17 BFGoodrich KO2. I had no rubbing issues at all. To get the wider stance, I bought some G/2 93-83-125T 1.25'' Wheel Spacers from 4WP and had them do the install. The stance is spot on and looks awesome with the spacers, but I now have some rubbing issues at full turn, especially in reverse. They recommended the cab mount chop but I told I would have to think about it. I can live with the rubbing but are there any big issues caused in the long run, due to the tires rubbing?

 

Well if you hit them hard enough you could chunk your tires. If it’s just minor and you don’t off road hard, leave it as is. The main downside is your tires could wear funny. The rubber is going to give before the metal does.

 

The rubbing is caused by the width. Your backspace plus wheel spacers are causing it. Try removing the wheel spacers.

 

The rubbing is not bad and I don't do any hard off roading. Thank you for the advice.

I just put the spacers on to get a little more of a wider stance. The 1.25" spacer really gives me the look I was looking for. Before the spacer, I had no rubbing issues with the tire and wheel combo. As long as there are no major issues casued by the rubbing when I'm at full turn, then I can live it.

 

It wont get better.....and as time/miles go by, suspension will settle (some) Tires will wear (some)....

CMC may sound like a radical mod. It's not. Personally, I'd trim the cab mount.

 

I guess so, if an that's what an 1.25" spacer does. I didn't know that a little bit of a wider stance turns your truck into a sports car.

 

They are going to charge $400 to do the CMC. Is that a fair price in your opinion?

 

Lot of differences in my case....2nd gen....lifted 2-1/2".....285/75r16s......

I started with spacers (1" Bora) , not to "look like a sports car", but to clear tire side walls from upper control arms when at full lock steering.

Later, I bought wheels with 1" more offset and eliminated spacers. Still needed the cmc. I NEVER regretted cutting the cab mount.

 

Going rate around here is $100 to $150. I'd like to have a few dozen to do @ $400 ea.

 

Call around to some fab shops where do you live I’m sure someone on here knows some one who can do a CMC in your area

 

Is that price $100-$150 for each side or both? The shop is charging me $400 for both sides.

I live in Lynnwood, WA. I'll have to call some other 4x4 shops and see what they charge to do it. Any other places besides a 4x4 shop that can do this type of work?

 

$100 to $150 Total....

Easy to make CMC plates. Easy to cut cab mount. (Both jobs done with cut off wheel on mini grinder) weld with mig welder. Takes a competent mechanic about 3 to 4 hours total. Material cost minimal.

 

Thats good to know. If I can find a better price than $400, I will go ahead and get it done.
