Is the Tacoma TRD Pro worth the extra $10k over a TRD Off-Road, ZR2 or Ranger?

If it's a mall crawler why not a base model Tacoma and put your savings towards mods?

All said I'm very excited to see what the Ranger Fx4 has to offer. It'll be a great adventure rig if can come thru with great mpg

You can get away with the short bed on full size trucks for the most part. Not on a mid-size truck you can't though! I found I use the bed way more than I ever do the back seats.

Not really the case with the Pro's around here. I totaled my Pro 90 days after I got it. 819mi on the clock. ACV was essentially what I paid for it (MSRP). I think I lost about $300 on the deal. Used that to get another just like it.

2017 Pros with 15k on the clock are selling for the same as a 2018 new @ MSRP around here.

I don't think that's unique to Pros though, more of a Tacoma thing. I totalled my 2016 and my payout was what I paid for it new. Granted mileage was really low, but still :p

Not all all what I'm seeing in the mid Atlantic region, year old PROs are taking 3-5k hit in depreciation in this area. We're not exactly shit kickers in the beltway region either.

My point was really that the Tacoma, and I believe the Pro, don't immediately lose $3-5k when you sign. Other vehicles yeah, less so the Taco.

Read 1st post 2 minutes ago. Not wasting time reading everything in between.

I want to think Toyota buyers are money smart.

Buying an upgraded SR5 for an extra $10k just embarrasses me to be accociated with you.

If you have that kind of money to piss away, buy any brand vehicle you want.

I'm sure I offended a few, but the OP asked and I responded.

    Flame on.

There are pretty big differences between the SR5 and TRDOR/PRO, but not many mechanical differences between the OR/PRO.

I don’t think it’s worth being embarrassed of someone for going OR versus SR5

lol. I bought a Pro because I already had a gen2 I built and I didn't want to spend the time to do another. I'll add the basics (sliders, little bit better armor, front locker, compressor, etc.), but nothing much more.

Anytime I have a suspension issue I will take it to Toyota. Any dealership. I got the service contract so anytime my shocks need to be serviced, I take it to Toyota and get a loaner. I'm not pulling them off to send them to whoever to get recharged, they are.

I'm not gonna go crazy off-roading with this one anyway.

I'll keep this one for at least 10 years, so the real extra cost isn't that great compared to an OR with both packages over time.

How would you spec the OR? I think this has a huge bearing if it's "$10k more" or not. Throw on the Tech and Premium packages and you're closer to $4-5k.

I went back and fourth on the pro's and con's and the TRD Pro won out. But it wasn't exactly a landslide either. Also, it must be noted that I have no intent nor interest in modifying whatever I buy.

    TRD OR Pro's:
    - I could order it in Cement
    - Priced slightly less once Premium and Tech was applied
    - Moonroof
    - JBL
    - Easier to negotiate (however, I wanted Cement, dealers weren't really budging as stock wasn't sitting around. I'm sure there's better luck with other colors)

    TRD PRO Pro's:
    - Differentiation in trim - not saying the pro is anything special in itself, but differentiated products typically do well in the market (stating this as an opinion, I don't want to upset anybody but I always consider resale in any vehicle purchase). I've had Integra Type R's and competition package M3's in the past and have seen better results from differentiated trim on the backend for resale. The Pro has a lower supply and people want them, figure the rest out.
    - I liked the cosmetic bits, brought the OR and Sport together + grill/fogs, crap that everybody is buying anyway
    - Loved the interior, the black with red stitching was pretty cool

So in my case, I went with the TRD Pro once it was all shook out I was looking at a $4k difference (I paid under MSRP for mine, you can too). That marginal price gap between the two is apparently enough to get really fired up about on TW. People will call you an idiot, a sucker, "more money than brains"... you name it. It's strange behavior by strange people.

I got Premium & Tech on my truck and paid around $35.5k, a Manual Pro would have probably been around $42k. As much as i love the Pro, the price gap was too large, plus taxes and the extended warranty would have also been higher too.

Toyota should just go back to making functional trucks like they did in the 70s and 80s and leave the fluff stuff (leather seats, tech this and that) to Ford and Chevy. Instead we have what's known today as "Luxury" pickup trucks that never haul, tow, or go off road.
