My 2004 has the grey interior that is prone to those cloth "dents" .
Has anyone on here ever figured out how to smooth those out or to improve the appearance ?

If your talking about seat padding sagging you can order new oem padding for you seats.

I know what you're talking about-they appear as some sort of "scuff" in the cloth. Mine has done this since year one and all I can tell you is they tend to work themselves out with use. I cause them by putting various hard items in the back seat and nobody ever sits back there so the scuffs stay. But when someone sits back there like the few times we took my gal's brother to Costco, they went away where he sat. Tough to pinpoint a remedy for this other than don't put items on the seats.
I even tried brushing the seats and the scuffs refused to go away. And there are scuffs in the cloth inserts on the back doors that just won't go away even after rubbing upholstery shampoo in them.
    It's a dilemma.

Previous owner of the 04 did something to the back seat. Can’t imagine what. I’ve loaded and hauled gear in my 98 for 20 years without issue.

But the 04 backseat has these marks. These aren’t dents, they are literal scuffs. The soft fabric is missing and it’s down to the bottom layer of fabrics.

Looks like slide a crate in and out or something. Probably easiest to just get a seat cover

I'd love to hear more about this. Is there something in particular I should search for?

Planning on it. I don’t care about the cosmetic of it but I need to keep Big Dummy’s hair off of it.

Just google your year and “oem seat cushion” you’ll find a bunch of Toyota dealership places that will be selling them.

    OME and worth every penny.
Looks like a car seat to me. Then again, I'm no pro on car seats.

Try using a bissell "little green machine" with hot water to try to steam the abrasions up. Or go to a detailer that has a steam cleaner. Those are micro tears in the fabric.
