I do various security gigs in my truck and want to be able to have the truck running and the lights off for example in the winter time when it’s cold. I don’t want the daytime running lights off just an option to switch off the amber lights at night.

I’m talking the amber lights not the headlights.

If I understand correctly you want the tail lights off with the headlights on?
If so you can cut the Green wire at Pin 18 of the combination switch and put an external switch inline to turn the tail lights on and off.

No I want all lights off with engine running. It’s hard to be inconspicuous when you have these bright ass amber lights on with the engine running

I just went out and confirmed it works on my truck.

With the truck off put on the parking brake. Start the truck. If yours is like mine NO exterior lights will turn on. With the truck still running let off the parking brake and the DTRLs will kick back on. If you put the parking brake back on it will NOT turn the lights back off so you'll have to repeat the process.

Turn off vehicle, put on parking brake, re-start vehicle. As long as your lights are turned off, the Amber DRLs will not turn on until you release parking brake. I do it all the time.

The parking brake on/running lights off is not a Toyota thing. That's been standard on any vehicle I've owned with DRL's.

My 14 Manual TRD OffRoad works the same way, DRL'S don't turn on until the parking brake is released but then they stay on until the next key cycle. I thought all the trucks have a DRL off mode on the switch, mine does.

    Maybe it's a 2.5Gen+ thing.

My '09 has the same light switch as shown below, DRLs always on, unless headlights on of course:

I think it's the differences in packages. I believe the sports had it always on where as the OR had it on a switch.

I'm just a peasant with an SR5 so I have no clue. Seems weird for Sport and OR to have different headlight switches, but go figure!

Yeah it's kinda odd. I believe it's not just the switch but the flasher unit. When I converted to LED turn signals I couldnt just replace the flasher like the ORs have with an LED compatible one but I had to put resistors before the lights to get rid of the hyper flash. Not a big deal but a flasher replacement would have been a much cleaner install.

My '13 5 lug does not have this problem.

DRL's have to be manually chosen.

Maybe you need to upgrade to the less lug package? :D
