Looks fine. If you're worried about it, spray some fluid film on it. But even if it were bad, you could always replace control arms. What is a little harder to replace is the frame. I'd check the frame in the back, especially the leafspring/shackle hangers. Those areas rust more often.

no matter what you do, apply some fluid film, as it will prevent rust from coming back. Will prevent it more than just paint

treating it with opsho will remove rust, but it will come back if the metal isn't protected against rust by paint and grease

After reading a huge thread about POR 15 I really want to.go that route but it seems like a huge job. I think I'll remove surface rust then use the fluid film for now. Maybe after that has settled for a bit I'll go over it with POR 15 to make it look nice. I really want to to do the skid plates with POR15 at the minimum. Then work on the frame. I worry about getting in all the nooks and crannies as well as all the seams between connected components. That is something I have not thought about in much detail.

For example, upper control arms and ball joints. Does this POR15 go on threads, will it cause binding issues? What about bushings/rubber parts? I assume that doesn't need it but what happens if it comes in contact with this stuff? I also don't have the resources to remove the frame and coat it so the top of the frame probably won't get completely covered.

I'm just being meticulous, but I want to be sure I do it as well as possible!

I really think you need to check the section of frame around the spring hangers

Then if you live anyplace where you see Winter (Snow Ice) Liquid brine is brutal!!

Despite fresh paint every fall till spring the liquid brine rusts everything.

Sorry I forgot to update y'all with the info about the rear of the truck. Everything back there is fine it might even have less surface rust. The truck is originally from Alaska, but has been in Texas most of it's life including the time it will be in my possession.

Cannot paint over Fluid Film. You would apply FF over the cured Por15 if you went that route.

Ospho you would almost need to paint over it as it is just a rust convertor.

I think you could brush, Ospho, Paint, then FF if you were really into it lol.

I was in the same boat. I only had a little surface rust that I wanted to get rid of. To properly do POR15 it would be easier to just take the bed off, wheels bla bla . I thought - how much time do I want to put into my late 90's pickup? I wire brushed and sanded off all the loose crap. I bought some Chassis saver and it's been on there for some years. It's not top of the line but I can attest that it works when applied properly. It's very messy and sticky. Humidity activates it. It will not allow the rust to form as it starves it of oxygen. I saw some video of Ted Nugents Bronco and using chassis saver. Might give it a try. It takes some time but it's worth it I think.

I think I'm going with wire brush, then POR15 and will yearly maintain with Fluid Film.

Update: I'm about halfway through with the prep process. Should have everything coated using the POR15 3 step process before next week hopefully.

I would spray the entire frame with gasoline or something similarly volatile and flammable and then throw a match on it.

atleast this is an easily repaired part of the frame with bed off. i probably wouldn't use the tow hitch as is

Start with eastwood rust converter then
I used chassis saver, apply with sponge brush on top of frame and hard to reach areas, also eastwood internal frame paint before of painting the outside frame, buch of pictures before and after at my media album
