Here are a few pictures of the sway bar on my 2002 XtraCab TRD. 225k miles. Looking like the bushings or whatever surrounds the sway bar need replacement. Also pretty rusty at these points. I noticed a bit of roll when driving through a highway construction zone with the uneven pavement. Always a little concerning of a feeling. Can anyone help me out as to what looks wrong and what should be done?

Yea, looks like you are ready for some new bushings, maybe even a new sway bar. Too bad you live so far, I took mine of years ago and its sitting in the garage.

yea, I'd replace it and the bushings. you've got metal peeling off the bar.

Can't tell if that's just paint flaking but it looks like it's on its way towards what is called blooming corrosion, if that's the case it's intergrangeular and that bar is indeed shot, there's even potential that it is sheared there inside the bushing and not doing anything effectively.

it doesn't look like paint peeling to me. Looks like its the actual metal being eaten away and peeling.

That's a lot of rust. Before you put any money in that truck can we get some photos of your frame? Especially the area around the front leaf spring hanger (both sides).

From the pictures the sway bar would be the least of my concerns. What's up with that wet spot on your steering rack..?
You could simply remove the sway bar. I had mine off for months with no issues. But, driving without one is not for everyone.

The frame was replaced in 2015 on this one and appears to have been neglected since but appears to be structurally sound. I'm planning on cleaning up the welds and treating the frame with POR15 once its warm out/we're done with salting for the year. Here are some pics of the leaf springs. Not sure if these were replaced with the frame or not? Been meaning to ask about how to go about preserving the rear differential as well. I assume the same route as the frame protection?

It was replaced, good. I was worried with how much rust was in the first photos, that your frame was Swiss cheese.

I want to make sure the sway bar is in good condition. I prefer having it for safety reasons. Not really off roading this one. Can you point out the part of the steering rack you mentioned? Not sure where you are looking.

I took my sway bar off several years ago. I'd offer to send it to you, but I gave it to a friend that's into knife making. He said it made good knives. Enough guys have taken them off you should be able to find one.

    Sway bar?

I'd be more concerned about the frame if you have parts rusting that badly.

Yeah just replace the bushings, but id be more concerned about the frame. Fluid film it.

The was my thought after reading the initial post. With the rust there's a decent chances your LCA cams are frozen/seized. My truck rode very rough over bumps and uneven pavement until I got the LCA bushings replaced and got a good alignment.
