Ok, I still can not get my Tacoma running... (97 2.7 5sp 4x4)

*Fuel pump only gets power when the key is turned to start.
*Check engine light does not even come on when the key is turned on (bulb is good)

Ok, so you turn your key to "ON' position and your fuel pump comes on? Right? Are you sure? have you physically heard it do so yourself???

There is a Green w/yellow stripe wire that comes off the computer that is supposed to ground the EFI relay to make everything work. It does not ground. continuity is good through the wire. If we manually ground the wire with a jumper wire the fuel pump kicks on full strenght. I was told that toyota fuel pumps do not run full power that they are supposed to pulsate the power. grounding the relay does not cause the pulsating action so we are guessing the computer grounds that wire in a pulsating manner, but its not.

The truck is not throwing a check engine light.... then we started to wonder if a pervious owner pulled the bulb out of the cluster or if it was burned out... Click the key on, and nothing. I thought all vehicles had the feature of clicking the key on and the check engine light would light up until the engine started.... my light will not light up no matter what.. even with a new buld in it...

So, what could cause the computer to not send a ground to the computer????

The truck was wrecked, thats the way I purchased it... Wrecked and half way fixed... The air bag was blown. A mechanic friend at the local toyota garage is stumped. He said they have drove Toyotas in the shop with blown air bags so that should not have resulted in a fuel cut. I have a new air bag, but I have not replaced the module, it is unplugged because it is making contact and plugging it in would just result in blowing my new air bag also.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Anyone interested in unplugging their air bag module and seeing if their truck will still start and run? (Its under the dask, dead center, below the lighter/ashtray, takes about 5 minutes to do)

so my main question.... What could possibly cause the Computer to NOT ground that ever so important wire??? I could splice it and ground it at the relay, but it would be running straight power non stop (with key on) then, no pulsating...

    Parts I have replaced...
    *Fuel Pump
    *Fuel Pressure Regulator
    *Computer ECM
    *Ignition switch
    *All fuses good
*All ground seem to be grounded

Oh yeah, someone might think that I can just ground the relay and be done with it...

Well it starts and runs like that, just not well... its so rich that the exhaust smells like fuel and burns your eyes... Leading me to believe that the fuel pump should be working in a pulsating action, keeping the truck from getting so much fuel pressure and running so rich.

What truck did the ECU come out of? Based on the CEL not lighting, I think you have the wrong ECU.

neither computer would cause the Check engine light to light up.

the computer in the truck was a 5-97 and same with the new one. Actually I think the new one is a 6-97 if I remember right. I could be wrong, but it is definatly the later 97 year. The computer is also out of a 97, base, single cab, 2.7, 5 speed, truck.

    Waaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt......

What if.... Just a guess..... What if the cab is not a 5-97 cab??? what if it is an older..... or even newer (98+) cab??????? How can I tell???? I think they said the cab came with the cab wiring and heat/ac stuff and even the dash was still in it... So maybe there is something there different in the cab..... How can I possibly tell what year the cab is??? Is there a vin# stamping somewhere in it??? The actual vin # tags have been changed to match the original truck since it is a wrecked rebuild.

The year of the cab isn't as important as what the donor truck motor was. If it was a Cali emission vehicle, that could be the poblem right there. Based on you build pics, your truck is not a Cali emission. What are the numbers on the ECU? Not the date code.

I am stuck at my shope for about another hour or two. As soon as I get back home I will check numbers on both computers and post them up.

i doubt that both computers, original (believed to be) and replacement, both from West Virginia, could be Cali Emission ones... but its worth checking out further... Every part I have had to get has seemed to matter if it is pre 5/97 or 5/97+. What changed so drastically? maybe the harness is different???? The cab came with the harness already in it.

It's possible. There is a guy in NY on here with a Cali truck. It happens more than you think. The easiest way to tell (motor wise) is the Cali trucks have a coil pack for each cylinder. Non-Cali's don't (like yours).

I don't know what they changed in that year. The bodystyle didn't change so it next to impossible to tell. There were some grill differences though I think. You may be right with regards to the harness being changed though.

Ok, I can't even focus on this damn Vinyl job...

I ran home and grabbed the ECM's

Original (that came with this basket case...)
    bar code # 1750008914z
89661-04260 (as best as I can tell, it may be 89601-04260)
    TN175000-8914 12v
    26P 16P 12P 22P

3RZ-FE (torn tag, may be 3BZ-FE)

Ink stamp on back on EMC

    8914
    5.8.97
    2

    New computer
    bar code 1750008912X

    89661-04260

    TN175000-891 (rest is gone)

    26P 16P 1(kinda messed up)2p 22P

    3RZ-FE

now the date stamp.... it looks that it was intentially removed... as best as I am my brother can tell... looks to end in 96. now that may be an issue considering the 5/97 cut off, however this computer is doing the exact same thing as the 5-8-97 ECM.

Now my brother hit me with a question that stumped me. I brought the cluster down so his electrician could test the continuity of the ribbon to make sure power could get to the bulb. and thats good... However my brother said... I thought that truck was a base model... its the LX if I remember right... his thoughts were Tacoma's didn't have a Tachometer on the base model, you didnt get that unless it was an SR5. Is he right??? this cluster has a tach... maybe its not the right cluster??? it may be the cluster out of the new cab.... maybe thats why the "check engine" light is not coming on??????

Ok, looking on car-parts.com it semes these are set up as through 5/97 and then 6/97. so I guess the 5/97 (my truck) is the end...

    numbers on the cluster...

    83010-04211
    1 812 011 466A

the date stamp is missing the last number... F............

LOL, Are you still fucking with that thing Bro'? Sounds like you have come up with a few more things to check, forget about the pulsating pump thing, Remember, key from off position to "ON" you should hear pump run for a couple secs then shut off !!! That pump isn't going to over pressurize those lines, still think some wiring is jacked somewhere, sounds like an open short also.. ...:frusty:

    ahhhh..... I may have it....

anyone with a 97 Tacoma ever check the ECM wiring???? My cab harness had a Grey plug going into the ECM.... the replacement cab harness has a white plug, which is the same as all 3 of the engine harness plugs going into the ECM. So we looked at the old cab harness plug and the new... not only is the plug a different color BUT so are the wires... the pin out color of the wiring is way different....

I may be on a roll here.... :D I hope today is my day.

    information worth knowing....

On an older Tacoma... the Fuel pump does NOT kick on when you turn the key to the "ON" position... The fuel pump does not get power until the second you crank the engine over... then the pump builds the fuel pressure up and kicks off again, unless the truck starts and runs.

The truck is running.... :D I had it towed over to the body shop so they can pull the frame straight. :D The bed is in my basement now, so i am planning to get it painted while the truck is on the frame machine. :D
