What is required to swap tail shaft to convert from 2wd to 4wd? Does it require compete trans disassembly? Trying to figure out my plan of action. I have a 4x4 trans i can swap from a t100 bit i noticed the pan has dipstick on the opposite side, hopefully that's the only difference

It’s a lot of work. A lot of work.

You have to tear down the entire transmission, basically. I would just buy a 4x4 transmission outright.

When I did my swap I paid $450 for an entire A340F mated with a j-shift transfer case from a Toyota wrecking yard.

X2. From what I understand, it’s a involved job. I’ve heard that you have to swap output shafts in the transmission, which means you would have to find the correct length and splined shaft. Like BartMaster1234, I simply purchased a 4x4 trans for the swap.

That's kinda what I figured, I did it on a th350 a few times. It is literally the last piece in the trans to come out to change output shafts. That was just one of the many adventures i had putting a v8 in a Toyota truck

If you’ve done it before then I would do it. It isn’t impossible it’s just tedious.

Maybe I'll just stick to my original plan and do a manual swap. I have one but it has a cracked case. 4x4 transmissions auto and manual for tacos are hard to find in NM.

If you find yourself in Reno try NNAWG Reno Aiport. I called almost every single wrecking yard within a 200 mile radius of San Francisco and all of them wanted $600-$1000 for a bare A340F with no transfer case. I found a full service yard in Reno with a whole section of Tacomas who sold me a complete transmission with 150k miles for $450.

Only reason I didn’t do an output shaft swap is because I’ve never done it before and also the matter of time. This was my daily driver and I drive it to school everyday. I did it over two weeks in my garage over Christmas.

If I had a different DD, I would’ve taken my time and done an output shaft swap. It’s cheaper and I would get to use my low mileage original A340E
