I have friends who work for an IT services company. Very thankful I don't. I like having my network with my own rules.

That machine that was bombarding the DHCP server turned out to be one with a reserved IP in DHCP, but the reservation was just listed as "BAD" with an incorrect MAC address. So, it seems it was requesting that address over and over again and the DHCP server was saying no. Just impressive that it could do so with that kind of frequency.

That's an interesting failure. The DHCP server shouldn't be sending anything about the reservation to the client if the MAC doesn't match. But it's Windows, it's only going to the expected, and desired, results half the time- none of the time.

I think I misworded it (or my brain did). Now that I re-read it it doesn't make sense.

Either way, the machine with a broken reservation kept requesting, the DHCP server kept replying with NAK frames. Maybe the DHCP server saw remnants of that MAC tied to a broken reservation and was therefore sending NAKs to it? Who knows. When I deleted the reservation, it immediately got an IP. When I re-created it and did a renew on that machine, it got the reserved IP that it should have in the first place.

Pretty bizarre issue. Also not sure how the reservation got broken to begin with.

You know you can probably support more, right? USB display adapters, my friend. Just letting you know in case there's a spare screen on the floor that you are sighing would work with your setup.
I have a T450s running 4 screens and the IT department always does a doubletake whenever they have to remote in (I work for a place where everything is locked down :()

Speaking of locked down, I've been waiting since Dec 22 for someone to fix an ECONNREFUSED error so I can get another someone to install the PowerShell addon for Visual Studio Code to my machine. I did the install on my home computer in under 5 minutes :bored: I know the importance of security, but sometimes...

I don't have space for any more. Plus, while I have tons of extra monitors laying around I don't have any more that match the LGs I have on my desk. Mismatched displays would definitely annoy me.

It's not so much security in our case as it is that giving out admin rights is a sure-fire way to create an infrastructure that is impossible to maintain. Those machines would be loaded with so much garbage software and would have so many settings changes that they'd all be nightmares and at that point that starts to impact security.

You definitely wouldn't give every employee a building master key. If they're cold, they ask facilities to deal with it. You don't give them the ability to unlock the boiler room and start messing with controls. Even if they're a licensed HVAC tech, they're not going to necessarily know why things are set the way they are set for that building and making a change (though it may work), could have consequences that they are unaware of. The irony to that is I work in a place that's terrible with key control. If they can't figure out the appropriate change key, they give up and hand out a master. So there are quite a few folks with masters that have absolutely no business having them.

I fully agree on the mismatched monitor issue. It already gripes me that tree gamma on my 27s is slightly different than my 24s.

On security, my experience here is that if you were the boiler room manager, you would need permission to enter the boiler room, permission to look at the boiler, and you would have to coach the janitor to do the maintenance on the boiler for you.
It makes me miss my smaller company where the sysadmin and I were buds and levels of trust were earned. He knew I needed to have advanced permission to get stuff done and not bother him every second with menial tasks, and I knew where boundaries were, and more important, I knew how to not be a dumbass.

When my building closed, I snagged a number of monitors so I'd have backups in case one died.

I just get annoyed that if I update something to the W10 anniversary update, it loses some of the preferences I set in the default profile. I spend a lot of time getting everything perfect and consistent for a reason.

When I updated my machine, it lost the admin pack. Noticed it pretty quick since it typically doesn't take long for me to need to go into AD for something.

I have a picture I had taken somewhere, at the Boston museum of science, where a 3D projection of Earth is asking me to clean up my unused desktop icons.

This happened a few weeks ago and i forgot this thread existed.
A teacher called saying their desktop didn't work. Went over and it was saying no os found. Took the desktop back to the office and pulled the SSD to find it was dead. Nothing would recognize the drive at all. Went back to the teacher and said its dead Jim. He looked at me and said no that cant be, I didn't back anything up. I said well it did. He has been with the district for over 40 years and had ALL of his teaching material on there with ZERO backs up made.
A hell of a learning lesson to get. What makes this even stupider is we have an onsite server with mapped paths to it for each teacher, in addition unlimited google drive storage for every employee in the district.
    Guess you cant help everyone...

Counter argument: why weren't you guys using desktop/folder/profile redirection again?

Take the idiocy from their hands. Let them complain it takes a few minutes longer to login.
