Yeah, if its simple its no big deal. I just don't use it enough so I forget how to position things on the page, so when I'm up against a deadline and in a hurry I get grumpy.

Fuck me, we're under attack. It's "robust" and multi-pronged. We're seeing it mostly going after remote-access methods (VPN and Citrix).

So far we're successfully fending it off, but I'm worried about the disruption or actual infiltration elsewhere while we're distracted.

If any of y'all are government or hospital groups (or like us, both) then you can expect a visit from the Russians.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released Advisory: “Malicious Activity Targeting COVID-19 Research, Vaccine Development”, on July 16th, 2020 concerning malicious activity targeting COVID-19 research and vaccine development in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada attributed to APT29 (also known as ‘the Dukes’ or ‘Cozy Bear’). APT 29 is a cyber espionage nation-state-sponsored group located in Russia. Historically, targets have included Western governments, foreign affairs and policymaking bodies, government contractors, universities, and possibly international news outlets.

I think I'm collecting way too many of these, about 39TB all together. The 2 on top of the laptop (file server) are active in raid0. The others are for backup and random usage.

Why we forced research to come in on the same point of entry as everyone else. And it took awhile to force everyone else to do that at all locations. Too many points of entry previously.

On furlough for 3 weeks so to draw UI (for the first time in my life) can not actively work. But still get calls on the side and brought up to speed. My first response to another retired Navy Engineer about the Russian hammer was "and this is why there is no situation so trivial that it doesn't warrant a small tactical nuke." I heard a sigh on the phone and something about that is why I am not in politics. Hey at least it isn't China this time which is a constant hammer on the hatch.

See above. Standards. As an Enterprise Architect all any needs to know is that resistance is futile, you will be assimilated.

It saves money. And provides better security.

Damn Raid 0 on a Stinkpad, are you sure that is what you want to do?!

With Imaging systems back in the day Raid 10 was the tits. Even built an Exchange server for a customer with Raid 10 once, hardware based of course not that software based crap. With SCSI 2 at 10 MB/sec because you know how important email is... She was a screamer though despite the Frac T1 at a couple thousands $$ a month.

Now every Tom, Dick and Susie likes to try to hit you up with Skype. I can ignore them too. Take a number and get in line. FIFO.

Nah, its just a easy to use hexadecimal value for debugging. You fill up empty memory with it (instead of random junk), and then when you're inspecting memory its easy to see if something got written that wasn't supposed to.

These 45 Netgear routers can be hacked and will never be fixed

I have always used Lynksys routers but recently bought a Netgear nighthawk wifi6 mesh system since Costco had it on sale. I wanted better coverage around the house and yard.

I have had it for two months and it has been absolute crap. I have pushed all the upgrades but devices constantly lose their connection and are unable to retrieve an IP address.

They have a 5 bar connection but it looks like the firmware is shit.

I looked at the Netgear forum for this model and it is 220 posts of others having the same problem and returning them to Costco.

I have to restart the main router at least once a week. I have tried setting the devices to a static IP and they will connect to the router but have no internet access.

This company seems to have gone completely down the crapper.

I am returning it to Costco and ordered a Linksys mesh network that is rated the best but is Wifi5.It is also $100 less than the Netgear one.

I see it as huge companies or government agencies that have the need and money to support large operations or infrastructures.

I've always had good luck with Linksys. My ex bought a Netgear router. I was surprised Netgear charges a subscription service for parental controls with the router. My Linksys has that built in for free.

Nerds on TW too? :) Degree in IS from the best university in Texas. :) Around 25 years in IT....Information Management/web site dude for around 9 years, 2 months and 21 days more. Then tech will be turned off as I do every single day after I log off. Retirement WILL be simple. I can guarantee that FOR ME. I DO teach my kiddos what they need to/want to know and no my son is mimicking things I teach him. Watched him trouble shoot a connection issue on his Nintendo Switch. He didn't know I was watching but gosh dang let me tell you he did everything right! I may have had a tiny lump in my throat watching him..very proud of that boy. He's 10.

Started out in mapping - GIS and got tired of being map boy and was more fascinated with the analysis side. That lead to database management, system administration and reporting. Until one day I started seeing patterns in bad data being distributed as "facts". Had a statistician group I managed that released a report to execs that in turn released to the Texas leg. That fiasco gave my group and the agency a big ole black eye. That lead me to Information Management. Where is the truth? Who owns the truth? Methods the truth is maintained? Secured? Retention applied? Master data management.... I've also become a business process analysis by default, COTS developer and SharePoint admin - that allows me to force/implement IM best practices AND automation. It's really about making the business work smarter, not harder. More importantly though, the business MUST provide staff, internal and external customers WITH ACCURATE information. Period.
