Wireless internet blows. I worked for a company that did it. Businesses would get really awesome internet speeds 6MB/6MB, but home users got the mediocre equipment. It was very rare we got the 1Mbit speeds.

If you have family that lives in clear view of you a mile away that can get broadband, look into http://www.ubnt.com/nanostation

I have a pair that I use point to point here at work. Been using them outdoors for 3 years now and they've held up. Also have them in Kenai, Alaska in -20 degrees and they work there as well.

I have a friend who works for Oakridge national labs in Tennessee. Their super computer is all AMD. It's crazy to talk to him about the stuff they do.

You'd do better tethering off a smartphone. Even an edge connection would beat that.

The local cable company offers fiber optic service. TV/internet/phone. I can get all of that with a 2meg connection for like 100 something a month. That's just a big jump from what we're paying now.

That's still pretty lame for home internet. We use AT&T Uverse. We have 6meg down/1meg up. The minimum connection speed for U-Verse is 3 megs. They offer up to 24 megs. They're not available everywhere though.

My grandpa has the 2meg service and it's really all I need at home. I can watch a 720p video on youtube without having to wait. And sometimes 1080p videos.

A lot of it has to do with the fact that I live in Podunk.

Do you know if you have verizon 4g in your area? You might be able to pick up a mobile hotspot device and use that as your connection.

After running that test I ran the same test the next morning with these results. I guess it just takes a little bit for it to register.

Believe it or not, this speed is actually tolerable. I can watch a 480p video on youtube without it giving me shit at all.

I just enjoy the nostalgia of older computers.

Oh no doubt, but my last job was upgrading ERP systems. Modern stuff is hard enough, that would be like slaying a dinosaur.

True, Back in high school I would speak to my old computer instructor about the older machines he used to work on. Everything was manually done for the most part, from command line to DIP switches.

oh the good ol' days :D
