Damn! How did you get that out? I had a set of batteries swell a tiny fraction of that mess and I had to take the UPS apart to get them out.

I took the top cover off, then bent the brace that goes across the front until it cleared the swollen battery. It bent pretty easily and bent back well enough that it all went back together.

I ordered myself a new home laptop - ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 AMD, Ryzen 5 Pro 6650U, 32 GB DDR5, 256 GB SSD, 4-Cell 52.5Wh Battery, backlit keyboard/fingerprint reader. Paid about $1050. I also picked up Lenovo's USB-C dock to replace my current old-style bottom connector dock.

I run a T14S Gen 2 Intel at work and I was getting frustrated with how inferior my home one was. I was still running a T470s which I'll devote to the Garage.

I'm honestly a pretty light user at home - the new Ryzens look impressive so I'm sure that'll be more than enough for my use. I just went with 32 GB RAM since it's soldered and I'm stuck with whatever I order it with. Figured that'll future proof it a bit. May or may not upgrade the SSD - I don't actually need more storage, but a 500 GB WD Black or Samsung 980 is pretty cheap if it gives a performance bump.

I've always been a die-hard ThinkPad guy. I think the TrackPoint is superior to any touchpad, their keyboards are great, and overall build quality is typically very good.

I had Dells from my employer, IBM/Lenovo laptops for home use. Never really any showstopper problems with any of them. I am typing this on a 10 year old MacBook which has had a battery replacement, also otherwise drama free.

On top of all this, they've got to be being targeted like never before. Right now every bad actor knows they are suddenly down to a tiny fraction of the staff they should have. If there's a hole anywhere, it's going to be found.

Just like how ransomware gangs like to target organizations on holiday weekends when they're less likely to notice and be able to do damage control quickly.

I am now convinced that Satan no longer sends demons to inhabit children and evil men, requiring exorcism for their removal.

He is instead sending his Hellspawn to infect networked peripherals.

This goddamn printer is fucking possessed, I'm sure of it.

Someone's account at my job might have been compromised. The solution was to reset everyone's password to "p". Oh, and we're just gonna wait the 90 days for it to expire before anyone will need to change it.

Not sure I should say. AFAIK, it's mostly an internal system. Anyone accessing it from outside probably needs an account with more privilege and a decent password (hopefully). Internally, as long as I know your username, which is easy to get, I can probably do some damage under the name.

I still don't have much hope because until a year or two ago, employee passwords for more important things such as pay and medical, that can be accessed from outside, were reset through an automated phone system, and were a fixed format of 10 characters. If I get the user name and know which date they reset their password, I have 6 of the 10 characters. The other 4 numbers typically appear after 5 censored numbers on important documents...

Who has passwords in the secure, modern world of multifactor authentication and role-based access control?

    Yeah.
We are encouraged to use passphrases that are 15 characters minimum. You can still use a password that is a minimum of 8 characters, but it resets every 30 days. Passphrases get 6 months (and to me are way easier to remember). External access is always 2-factor or 2-step.

But who cares, it's FRIDAY!:duh:

Federal IT. Someone went a wrote a bunch of things (I think they’re called “laws”) requiring us to meet certain security requirements for protecting Veteran data blah blah blah. Now it’s all about Zero Trust. We have firewalls for our firewalls. Takes a shit-ton of effort, but it beats the alternative of explaining to Congress how you lost the bank account information for 30K employees.

Which happened about 10 years ago.

Before they hired me, of course.

For those of you that work on KGs, had an issue I've never seen before but apparently is somewhat common. Powered down for an outage, powered back up but both KGs were not staying on. Turns out the power buttons can fail and you have to hold the power button down
