Got a good one. User is plugging in USB Flash Drives to place them on the white list to be used by other users. When she ejects one of the flash drives, she is getting the BSOD error 3B.

Now doing my own reaserch the cause of this is:

This error has been linked toexcessive paged pool usage and may occur due to user-mode graphics driverscrossing over and passing bad data to the kernel code.

My question is, how can a USB Flash drive cause a page pool usage error? Or a Graphic Drivers error?

Yes I did reboot the user, Win 7 64 bit pops up fine, but has soon as the eject is pressed on the flash drive, it happens again. :p

Should I do a Memory scan? Should I throw the crappy HP out the window?

    Thanks

That smells like a driver issue, honestly.

For the 'eject' command on a USB stick to hork the machine? That's cutting power or sending a bad interrupt either to the wrong device, or to one device of many on an all-in-one.

Lemme guess...machine is a pre-built name brand with an all-in-one type motherboard. Shot in the dark.

Check for updated and CORRECT drivers on the motherboard components. Especially USB and chipset ones. Those are the most PITA and problematic for support and issues.

Also check the BIOS for APM or advanced power management settings. One of those set incorrectly could be catching the USB eject command as a half-assed 'sleep' or 'hibernate' command and horking things up.

Thanks for the help, and the quick response. I hope I can return the favor in the future.

Let us know how it goes. If it turns out that this doesn't solve the issue, we may need to do further troubleshooting.

Remember that the whole USB architecture kind of sucks with respect to how it assigns addresses to the devices connected to it. I'd do as Xaks suggests plus check the drivers/update Windows to be sure you have all the latest and greatest.

The good news is, the OS is 64 bit Win7, which is head and shoulders better than XP ever was.

Granted, its still kinda crappy, but still... BSODing in Win7 64 is actually fairly tough (comparatively speaking, of course). Its a lot more stable code base now, even across hardware.

Sorry, just sat down from lunch. I ran a Win Memory Diagnostic on the machine and left. I haven't heard anything from the user, so I guess she is golden.

I had other fires to put out.

    Thanks again all.

Quick question for you guys. My computer won't boot. I can press the power button and the fan and everything will turn on for a secon like normal then nothing happens. But the lights are still on for power indication. Any ideas? It's a gateway M-285-e

It could be several things. Does it come up with a blue screen with a code? If just a black screen. It could be the video card, or the motherboard. If the video card is built on the motherboard. Then I would try a separate video card. That is if the computer is worth spending money on. If it is more than 3-4 years old. I would replace it.

I just google searched your pc. I didn't realize it was a laptop. My suggestions were for a desktop. A laptop I would suggest replacing before putting a ton of money into it. You can get laptops dirt cheap nowadays, $300-$600.

Nope everything is just blank. And the CPU light doesn't flash past the initial powering on. If that makes sense

Do you get any beeps on boot up? It sounds like a motherboard. I would buy a new laptop before replacing the motherboard. With parts & labor you could easily spend more than the cost of a new laptop.

Probably. You could salvage the hd & battery.

Will it start on AC power and without the battery installed?

If you stick a CD in the drive, will it boot from that?

What if you repeatedly press the BIOS button?

Thought it was a desktop, not a laptop. Usually, resetting the BIOS is done while the machine is off.
