    Yeah that ^

Just choose 32-bit or 64-bit according to how much system ram you have.

be careful with that too. I believe they still limit the home edition to 4 Gb even in 64 bit.

    *cough* Linux

    :D

I was actually reading an article on PCWorld about Linux today. I liked Ubuntu before they came out with their new UI. It's still great, but I wish I could go back to the old one.

    LOL, this.

Don't need that. And why wouldn't you go back to Lucid?

At any rate, you can just do an apt-get install gnome-fallback.

Then you logout and change the session from the login screen... Should say Gnome Classic if I'm not mistaken. I can never remember which icon to click, I think it looks like a gear?

Voila, good ole legacy Gnome on 11.10. The package is gnome-classic on 11.04 I think.

I'm curious to see what 12.04 brings, since my server is on 10.04 and will need to go up to that at some point...

I wouldn't mind using Linux more, but they really need to get a good support model before many businesses will adopt it.

Many already have commerical support. Ever heard of Red Hat or Novell? They've been around for a very long time, selling Linux support.

I believe ever since the inception of Ubuntu you could also purchase support from them (Canonical) directly. Why do you say it doesn't have support...?

I'll play. Been in IT for about 8 years. Started as a Jr. System Admin about 11 years ago. Then worked as an IIS/ColdFusion Admin for the big aerospace company for a year. Then took 3 years off to go fuck around. Figured I needed to work again so went and got certified back in 2005. Then an HR Ops Administrator for a wireless company for a few months and now at a software company for the last 6.

Did SME work when I started at this last company. Last year or so I've been focused on Program Management. Kind of miss touching the technology - now worried more about budgets and resources and reports. It's a cool career but when things are going crappy, it can really suck like people said. Seriously, I'd be happy retiring early and living on some acreage and running around on an ATV shooting stuff. I don't need much...

Here is a topic we can discuss today...

We have a small operation, 5 offices, a handful of printers, everywhere has a gig connection except one office, and it's 100 meg... I want to setup a centralized print server.... Anyone have recommendations? My current thought is a virtual XP box to handle everything, I don't think I need much more than that...

    Novell?

i've replaced or been in more placed that have yanked out novell that i can count. They only moved to a linux platform when they started to die off.

I would love to see someone challenge MS for server/desktop OS. It would make things better all around. MS would have to make better products, and in turn, everything would be better with more competition.

I don't see many companies moving to a linux based platform unless there are more people who can support it. It would require a lot of training or replacement of current employees.

a virtual XP box should handle that pretty easily. Do you have a server with AD?

Active Directory? Not in use, we aren't on a domain, but our PACS computers use IHS's domain.

Been in the IT field since I was 19 so about 6 years now. Currently working in a Network Operations Center monitoring, building and fixing networks over satellite links. I can see this thread being very useful in the future. Thanks for creating, OP.

I see you know a lot about web servers...

60% of all web sites run on Apache... What does Google use? Oh yea, Linux. What do most of the big boys use to host their web pages with? Oh yea, Linux.

Just because you're in an AD world doesn't mean everyone is. We have a lot of SUSE servers - they have their place.

I wasn't talking about Novell like Netware or any of that crap (which is based on Linux too, but I'm sure you knew that...), I meant SUSE. Yeesh. Look at a lot of appliance devices too, we have a lot of 'appliance' servers that run Linux.
