I bought a POS laptop off of ebay for like $200, installed ubuntu on it, set it up to be always on low power mode, listening on port 3389 for an RDP in.

Stuck it on a bookshelf and walked away.

The client RDPs in from home, the router NATs the connection to the laptop, authenticate, bang.

You're now on the inside with a direct connection to the LAN, and on on a restricted linux desktop the windows script kiddies can't do shit.

    *shrug*

Worked for a couple of title companies down here that I set up. Like, less than 10 employee companies, so resources were thin. I'd get the laptop working and running, take an image of it and store it on a thumb drive. The laptop dies? Buy another one off of ebay and blow the image down to it.

I havent used any of the services personally, maybe some others can chime in. But wouldn't using dyndns or another dynamic dns service be of some help?

It's been some time since I've used Windows. If it were Linux, I'd say a simple SSH (SSHFS or SFTP) connection would do. I'm pretty sure Windows doesn't do SSHFS, but should be able to do SFTP.

Anyone else around here use Chrome and find that it has become awful? Ie9 is vastly superior at this point in time... I'm pretty disappointed by it.

At work I use Pale Moon (a mozilla derivative). It's pretty fast. It was my only choice for a browser at work. My computer has IE8 and I can't upgrade it because I'm not the administrator. Pale Moon is the only browser I can install and not require admin privileges.

Are your trolling or...? I haven't seen IE win anything for several years. I could be out of the loop, though.

I will say that IE11 is causing some hard times at work - it doesn't have legacy support for SSRS, but that's all the browser news I have.

No issues with Chrome on my MBP, haven't started up my PC in probably 2 weeks, so I'm not sure about it.

No trolling, Chrome has been awful lately. I haven't used ie10 or 11, i usually don't use their updates until the corporate world has adopted them.

Note to self: DO NOT install WinXP in VBox over a wireless ssh connection.

I was having some dropout issues with Netflix via DVD/Wifi I hard wired with Cat5. After doing some research I'm finding Cat5 is the slowest cable available and limits data exchange. I plan on upgrading to Cat6A to computer, Xbox and entertainment center.

    Anybody else upgrading to 6A?

Some areas where I am at have 6, others don't. :(

If your needing new cable, I reccomend this site. monoprice. Specifically that link if you need ethernet cables with ends already made.

    try cat3 :D

cat5/cat5e will do up to gigabit speeds. changing your cabling will only do so much. there's no use going above cat5 unless your equipment in house will not go anywhere near fast enough for cat6, which will do up to 10 gigabit, IIRC. streaming issues are more than likely going to be broadband speed issues. even if you have gigabit in hour house, it will help in-house transfers/communications, but you will be limited by your ISP connection.

someone else clue in if i'm wrong in my thinking here.

Jhodge is correct about whats in house compared to what the ISP has coming in. Pending the equipment you have hooked up will also effect the speed. Also, pending your ISP they could be limiting your speed too. Been hearing more of that going on as of late.

Both modem and router appear to support the higher speed. I'm not sure if download speed equals bandwidth.

download 22 Mbps upload 7 Mbps

check the ports on your router. i doubt they are higher than gigabit and in that case, cat5 is fine. the port from your modem is probably only 100mb as well. cat6 wouldnt make a difference IMHO.

More bandwidth is good if you have multiple devices. Most of the time, you're not going to be downloading any single thing that will top out your bandwidth.

Thanks, you guys were right, added a net gear switch/router, it's the only thing pulling a gig in my whole system. DVD, laptop, Xbox & TV appear to only need 10/1000 mbps.

    :frusty:

had an issue in SCOM where someone setup a monitor to hit a website and tell if it is up or down. They then preceded to click on the check box that would evaluate the health of the links on the page 5 levels deep. it wouldn't have been so bad except the page had links to the companies facebook, instagram, linked-in, and youtube accounts.

Now I just found 4 more monitors that were setup the same way. :frusty: fucking idiots clicking on shit they don't understant.
