It depends on the juice level. For just everyday cat 5 type stuff, you don't need a permit anyplace that I've lived/worked.

It's when you start having that cable start carrying levels of power that permitting starts being needed. Once you get up past basic POE designs, or in more extreme environments needing more shielding, is when you need actual permits.

Just stringing cat5/6 around for standard data? No.

 

I want them to try to make me pull permits every time I need to drop 480v somewhere.

 

I have to say I can't think of many industries where if all goes well we eliminate our own jobs with automation and streamlining. /philosophyOff

 

But the nice thing is that as we innovate and make things easier and better for the users, the users undoubtedly find new ways to be dumber, thus ensuring that we all have job security.

 

The problem with our industry is we have to be smarter than the people we work for, yet often get paid half as much and work twice as hard. If I could go back in time, I would have slapped myself in freshman year of college until I went into the business college. Capping out in 100 level math classes, Fridays and weekends off of class, sharing classes with hot women? nooo, I had to have an ego

That's like:

 

I will spend a great deal of time putting together step-by-step instructions showing how to do something complete with screenshots, arrows, and more detail than anyone would ever need. I account for every possible snag they could hit, explain even the stuff that I don't think would need explaining, and think "Awesome, now I will never have to do this again because they will be able to handle it on their own. With these instructions, nobody could possibly mess this up!" People still mess it up because they don't even try to read it. It still saves me time because probably 75% of people can handle it at that point. It's just the few that can't because they don't try to.

Someone once asked me if I could put together instructions for them so they don't have to bother me to do something that I'd do for them every couple months. I did. Next time they asked me to do it for them I was swamped and told them it would be a while until I could get to it. I sent them those instructions again telling them to give it a shot and give me a call if they get stuck and I'd help them along. They didn't even try and told me "they would feel more comfortable if I did it." I was livid. Don't ask me to spend an hour putting together instructions for you if you're just going to say that. I think I let that sit for a full month before I bothered with it. Worst part is, it wasn't a hard thing--just a data export to CSV and upload to a website. It would take them 15 minutes tops going slowly to follow my instructions and get it done on their own.

 

Any of you Network/Systems Admins ever had an employer (small company) that wants you to redo their website, knowing that you have no formal training in web development?

 

Yep. Once.

I refused. I stopped dealing with page code when HTML 4 was *new*. I was firm and clear that if they ordered me to do so, I would...but I would also be turning in my 2 week notice that very day.
