I'll tell you what, there were times back in the day when I lived out in those boonies and had to get to the mill. I'd end up basically putting it in drive and crawling the back roads....taking 2, 3 hours to get there.

But I never once missed a shift for snow. Ever.

When I had my 6000SE, a four door no less, with the 2.8 in it....one year it there was a 3 hour one-way crawl. There were drifts taller than the hood in several places that literally took me four or five tries to bash through, then I'd have to get out and clear the radiator intake of packed snow so she could breathe.

If you're patient and smart, you can climb through an awful lot of crap.

I grew up in Michigan so snow means nothing. I come into work all the time here in Denver when other people "can't make it in". Before I was in an AWD Audi, though now it feels like cheating with the 4x4 taco with a set of blizzaks in the winter.

I used to live less than a mile from work. Some people I worked with also lived in my neighborhood. None of them would make it in.

I care not about getting to work. I can and do work from home when it snows. I prefer the warm weather.

If you're on vacation, you shouldn't be looking at those. Turn that shit off and get away from work.

I'm a 1 man show, my phone started ringing before those emails came in. It's no big deal, there will be compensation for me being bothered.

Apparently they blew up a 480v panel in the plant.

Hahaha yep. I also manage the CCTV system, phones, administer the servers, pull Cat5, manage the wireless.. you get the point.

Wireless in a building that is constructed fully of stainless steel panels is hell.

I used to do that too.

I'm happy that I only kinda do now. If I'm not around, there's another dude that could do it, and if he's not around, there's two others that are competent enough to be walked through many of these kinds of things remotely if needed.

I'd have to get a pretty fat payday to be a true one-man show again at this point. I'm gettin' too old for that shit.

In my experience, you have to be a specialist to get fat paydays. Places that want one man shows typically don't want to spend the money required to hire a few specialists.

This is very true. I stopped doing the one man show thing; bigger companies pay better with fewer hours and responsibilities typically. However, I live in an area with lots of bigger companies to choose from.

I dunno about the fewer hours thing. I had 58 last week at a company with 200k employees.

It's a small company in a rural area. I average around 60 hours a week.

Lucky. I get paid for 40 regardless of how many I work. I think my longest week was around 80 hours.

...and I wouldn't do anything else for a living, even if I were as good at it as I am at being a sysadmin.

I love what I do. I get to help people, I get to yell at people, I get thoroughly mentally and intellectually challenged, I get knocked in the teeth every so often, and they *expect* me to be grouchy and drink.

How can you not love this job? I make enough to live comfortably on and barely made it out of High School, with no college degree. There's not a lot of options to make this kind of $ without student loans that don't involve the adult film industry.
