Theres more then just MPG saved on these newer rigs. They are also covered under warranty. Freightliner, Volvo, and peterbilt all have mobile tech assigned to customers yard who perform oil changes, warranty repairs, and maintenance. The bonuses of running newer vehicles is far outweighing maintaining older ones.
As far as my point in new progress to engine tech, its coming. In fact in some places in the world we are already there. Toyota has 8 years to perfect their next generation, and I suspect it to be good.

We'll see I suspect a neutering of vehicles just like what happened in the 70s and it took them ~20 yrs to figure it out and make power again and meet the stds.
Also to your point of what big rig manufacturers are doing to sell trucks they gotta do something because most drivers or the ones I know hate all the increased maint., power loss, driveability, and reliability of the newer trucks since the EPA has been coming down on them.

Cmon guys! You dont feel like the 3rd gen is a place holder?? Like it's just here to keep the EPA satified?? So many complaints every day about this truck! I love mine, but it's not "the best ever". Toyota made a sexy ass truck that would sell 20,000+ a month so they could have the money to perfect the next generation.

I hear you about the bug rig complaints, but do you not feel like the next thing is going to be a big deal? I do!!!

Seriously, we've got OVtune here tuning STOCK TRUCKS. Any vehicle I've had turned in the past was because I slapped some serious shit onto it!

Nope and Nope. Not saying that there isn't some cool shit coming down the pipeline because I think there is but it isn't due to the CAFE regs or EPA BS it's coming from racing! We don't have the cool magnetic shocks that are in Corvettes for example because of the gov't it derived from LeMans. Same goes with carbon ceramic brakes. Or high revving small displacement engines. Engine management systems are leaps and bounds ahead in racing compared to whats being used in the factory stuff and it trickles down eventually. I remember using some of the first MoTec stuff back in the 90s it was what factory ECUs became after the turn of the century.

As long as the neutering of vehicles is due to emissions requirements and stds happens then manufacturers are faced with trying to make due with what they have to work with and work around dealing with such requirements.

I did a very in depth and scientific approach to making a vehicle more efficient and still meet emissions standards yet got rid of some emissions equipment. Sent everything off to the EPA and was told to go pound sand essentially. It's bureaucracy man look at the big picture here. Things are done to satisfy certain groups no matter the political leaning.

You're starting to talk way out of production model vehicles. I like where your head is at though. I will remain hopeful

Getting back to the Baxter filter adapter... It seems to me that adding the baxter filter adapter would make a bigger mess when doing doing an oil change. The oil above the new filter can needs to drain out around the new filter. With the existing filter housing you can drain the oil first. I don't see a solid benefit from changing the filter type.

Yeah, I really don't get the hate for the cartridge filter.

    You can drain the oil.
It uses less materials to make.
    Cheaper.
You can inspect it when pulling it out.
    Lower Profile.

Read the Colorado forums, the F150 forums, the Ram forums, etc. Everyone is having issues with wonky shifting, hesitation and dead pedal feel because manufacturers are tuning these towards economy and not performance. People need to stop acting like this is a Toyota-only issue.

I have a 2016 Ram 2500 with the Cummins. The forums are rife with dead pedal issues, issues with the vehicle falling on its face when stepping on it, etc. People are either tuning them, running a pedal commander or running it in tow haul mode. That should sound very familiar to everyone here.

As for the whining on this forum - when I Craigslisted the aftermarket shit on my 2017 I got to meet quite a few 3rd gen owners. I'm not going to project the whole Tacoma owner demographic from those 10 - 12 people that either purchased or showed interest in the goods, but let's say that a portion the tuner crowd has moved from WRXs, Civics, MR2s, 86s, etc to the Tacoma.

The placeholder comment holds no water. The second gen commanded the marked due to a lack of a decent competitor. It did so with no frills, bells or whistles. The 3rd gen is a continuation of that formula and has literally no real current competition in the segment - hence the high sales numbers.

With the butt ugly gladiator and the ranger (already inheriting a buggy drivetrain from the FoMoCo parts bin) coming out, it will be interesting to see if Toyota makes severe changes to that formula. Unless they get crushed in the segment, I do not see them doing anything other than what they've done forever - small, safe, incremental changes.

I've done about 6 oil changes on these vehicles and I agree with you. Don't know why people are so put out by the cartridge.

Why do people always blame the engineers. This type of thing is usually done for cost savings. And trust me, engineers hate designing for cost savings.

Also, most people don't change their own oil. Much less check their transmission fluid. I'd venture to say, most people can't change a flat for themselves. So I don't think this change affects most customers.

Probably right. They're the ones that think a mod is installing floor mats. :)

Or the ones that attempt to change their own oil and drain the transmission fluid instead. Then add 5 quarts of motor oil and wonder why they only made it 4 miles.

What’s even MORE awesome is they make a super expensive kit (for what it is) to turn it BACK into a cartridge. That way you can have 3’ of extensions hanging off your engine. Freakin awesome.

Someone was schilling a cartridge conversion for the 4 banger lol. As if that engine needed any outside input from kooks.
