We have consistently run into cargo issues with our Jeep Wrangler, so it’s time to switch to a truck. I’ve been looking between a TRD Pro and TRD Sport. I see the main thing that separates the two is the suspension, so I’m not sure if the Pro is worth it for the extra money if I’m lifting it anyways. I’ve been researching lifts and I think I’ve narrowed one down, the FOX ultimate 3” lift.

The new Tacoma will be a third car used 70% on road by my wife when she needs it, and 30% off road by me on the weekends.

I want it to ride well on the roads, I don’t want to hear about it from my wife. What’s everyone’s thoughts on this lift? In addition, to the ones who have this lift, what size tires are on your truck?

Please ignore any ignorance on my part. I’m new to this truck thing, but honestly looking forward to it more than my Jeep.

If you plan on lifting it, don't go for the pro.

If you plan on wheeling it, don't go for a sport.

    My .02 anyway.

Tire size, you'll be able to go up to a 285 with CMC.

I went from a Jeep to a Tacoma as well. The main thing that differentiates the Pro and Sport is actually the rear locker. It's pretty easy to build a better suspension than the Pro has for less than the premium you'll pay for the Pro name.

The TRD Pro has TRD Sport looks with TRD Off Road functionality, so if you like the looks of the Sport (hood scoop, color matching mirrors, handles, rear bumper), and want the rear locker, it might be worth it to you for the Pro. If not, you can get an Off Road (has the locker) and upgrade the suspension.

    1. pat yourself on the back for making a smart decision.
    2. count the money in your wallet that you'll save on repairs and wasted time in the shop.
    3. get ready to do some mods!

I’ll look into the TRD Off Road as well. Not sure why I haven’t, I guess because I like the looks of the Pro and the Sport closely resembled it. As for the cab, I’ll need a double for the fact I have two kids.

I’m up in Northern VA, anyone have any good suggestions to 4x4 shops.

    I went from a 14 JK Sport S to an ‘18 Pro.

I don’t feel like it needs lifted at all. Great ride, seats are much more comfortable, and it was maybe $5k cheaper than a new Rubicon.

Now only if Toyota would make it easier to pull the doors off...

A 2” lift was not that hard to install. It’s a one person DYI “Medium” task. It is just bolt-on, no special tools. Saves $400 - $600 in installation labor.

If you don't need a second row, I highly suggest the Access Cab TRD Off-road. The rear locker comes in handy, the Sport's hoodscoop does not. Plus the stock suspension is cushier than the sport. Capability + Shorter Wheelbase + Better Ride On/Off-road. Non color matched fenders are cool too.

I’ve always had a lifted vehicle, all Jeeps. Not sure if I have the will power to not lift the Tacoma. Im willing to spend the money on a solid lift with a nice ride considering my wife will drive it mostly when it’s needed. There will be no rock crawling. We will use it for getting to camping sites out in the middle of nowhere basically.

I don't really suggest lifting higher than 2-3 inches cus it invites unnecessary problems and it doesn't sound like you'll actually have a need for it. The vast majority of guys around here run OME springs and Bilstein 5100 shocks front and rear. If you don't like the rear leafs you can replace them with DAKAR's and have a pretty practical/affordable/capable setup.

I went from a 4 door Rubicon to a double cab TRD Offroad. My jeep actually had more room as i had removed the back seats but i’m making the Tacoma work plus it rides 3x nicer.
Get a TRD Offroad if you’re going to wheel it so you get the locker. Then you can buy a better suspension than what comes on the Pros for less money.

The access cab does not have a shorter wheelbase. Just more bed space. The wheel base is the same as the dcsb.

Everyone overlooks the SR5. It can be as much as $10K cheaper depending on were you are. If your not keeping the suspension and you know how to drive without the fancy crawl control, then why pay for them? The only thing I wish I had was the locking diff.

My .02 would be to get the Off-road.. Mainly because of that locker, I have the Sport 4x4 and its amazing but at times you wish you had the locker... You can always pick up/swap a hood/mirrors and I'd even change the fenders flares to bushwhackers. You had a jeep before so odds are youll prolly swap out the front/rear bumpers out anyways and the suspension is gonna be changed out no matter how you cut it.

There are lots of companies that make lockers that fit our trucks, just does one miss it enough to pay $500+ to add that on.
