My 1990 Laredo was $16K...Most of the ones I see around town are Rubicon'ed up mall crawlers with greying retirees behind the wheels...Like a Corvette, by the time you can afford to waste the dough, you're too old to enjoy it.

Dude....I might color my hair but I'm not that old (and we have a corvette and are young enough to enjoy it).

If you work hard & manage your money properly - you can have all the nice toys before your really old. ;):p

    This.

It doesn't matter how offroad capable you rig is when it's not running. Jeeps are plenty capable when working, just not very capable at staying working.

    :p

I had two different Jeep Wrangler trail rigs for a combination of 9 years and both of them were just as reliable as my toyotas.

I would argue you didn't have them nearly long enough. 9 years is almost broken-in in my opinion.

Hey, glad you had a good experience with yours, but lets be honest: Toyota's calling card has always been long term reliability. Chrysler, especially in the past 10 years, not so much. Two Jeeps over 9 years averages 4.5 years per vehicle...not very long...granted there's a lot we don't know...you may have had one longer than the other, were they purchased new, were they high mileage, how many miles did you put on them yourself, etc.

Point I'm getting at IS...all available data points to ChryCo products having worse than average reliability, especially in the past decade. Anyone can get lucky with any brand, like the few guys on here with lemon Tacos (Isthatahemi, I'm looking at you...)

    To be honest?

Everyone has their own thoughts & opinions about vehicle manufacturers. And most of those opinions are based on personal experiences (or family/friends experiences).

There's a reason why they call is 'brand loyalty' - and I guarantee .....you'll find just as many brand loyal people for other manufacturers as you will with Toyota. Regardless of what the stats say.

Toyota's long lived history of reliability seems to be falling by the wayside.
When you're on top, there's no other place to go...but down - while everyone else catches up to you.

I don't know if it's reliability that's gone by the wayside so much as quality. The difference between the two is nuanced, but there is one.

A reliable vehicle will perform its basic function (transportation) until approximately the end of time without major breakage. However, it may turn into a rattle trap, have electronic problems, etc - initially, this is what the jap brands were - they'd get you there for sure, but everything aside from the drivetrain was spartan and chintzy.

A *quality* vehicle is well assembled initially with tight tolerances and materials and components unlikely to be defective or poorly designed. However, it won't necessarily fall into the reliable category. Volkswagen is a great example of this. This is why JD Power's initial quality studies never correlate with Consumer Reports' reliability surveys.

Toyota used to have both. While I agree their quality (especially the interiors, which leave a lot to be desired now) is more on par with domestics these days, they still run forever.

Okay, I had my three Jeeps for a combined 20 years and 410k miles. Not a single drive train or running gear failure in all those miles, many of them offroad.

I've had several Toyotas as well, the latest a 2009 AC cab 4X4. I wouldn't hesitate to buy either brand based on my actual experience with them.

Oh, and I had one Ford in the middle there somewhere. Never again.

Don't know why everyone has to bitch about Jeeps. They have there purpose just the same as the tacomas do. And i'm quite sure that most of the people that whine and bitch about jeeps have probably never owned or driven one.
And further more the reason you probably own a tacoma (or toyota for that matter) is probably because your friends or family have toyotas.
My CJ7 served me well for it's intended purpose as does my Tacoma. And quite alot of aquaintances of mine own jeeps and have had "Zero" problems.

i had a 1984 CJ-7. the thing was tough to keep running..i kept at it, and learned. got down to the crux of the problem. my screen in the gas tank, failed and was letting crap get to the carb. i refurbished the gastank, cleaned the carb one last time..and was good to go! it was bombproof. i drove it back and forth from cali to texas. one time, i lost my brother and friend in the desert. fogged in. when the fog cleared i had gotten back to my jeep, but everyone was lost. i put that thing in 4x4low, and let the BFG muds go to work. i was driving cross country up and over hills, over bushes..Tread lightly was not followed at all. i found the doofuses walking the wrong way. that jeep saved them from a night out in the dark. it ability to X-country was amazing. light, nimble..torquey. my tacoma couldnt do that.

My 2009 Access Cab 4X4 couldn't either. But my 1984 Toyota 4X4 truck could. Too bad Toyota doesn't make cheap, bulletproof, and offroad capable together in the same vehicle anymore.

I wouldn't touch a Jeep in regards to general reliability and quality. And I've owned two, and my family another three... not to mention one of my best friend owns a Jeep dealership.

The bottom line is our few owned does not a trend make... taking OBJECTIVE, statistical data... they're not even in the same ball park in the quality area...

    nimble... yes.
light... yes - however that is also a downside
torquey - not that relevant if you're gearing is optimal.

this is more to do with the driver than the vehicle.
