Derek Jeter just passed Lou "Iron Horse" Gehrig as the all time Yankee hit leader.

    Bravo.

What impresses me most about Jeter is his defense, but conrats to him on the record. I still hope the Yankess lose.

Just to preface, i AM a Yankee fan...

    My thoughts on Jeter's accomplishment:

I'm not a big fan of subsets of subsets of stats (ie, batting average, then batting average during night games, then BA at night vs. lefties, then BA at night vs. lefties in late innings, etc. You get the point.)

As such, Jeter's hit record as a Yankee might not really mean anything except for what it says about his durability and approach to the game. And, yes, to the attitude he brings to every game and every plate appearance.

He's got the grit of old time players (he's slightly ahead of Pete "Charlie Hustle" Rose's hit pace) like Thurman Munson, Jim Rice (who shouldn't even be mentioned here b/c of his un-prompted slur against Jeter 2 weeks ago), George Brett, Nettles, Freddie Lynn, Yaz, and all the others who played the game HARD, TO WIN, every day.

When Jeter signed his 10 year deal with the Yankees, it was either the highest or next highest 10 year deal in baseball history. So you might put him in one of the "Yankees always out-spend, over-pay" categories.

But just look back at the way he puts himself in every play. That diving catch into the stands FOR A FOUL BALL in which the Yankees ultimately beat the Red Sox in extra innings.

That play in the post season where Jeter relayed the throw from right field to get Jeremy Giambi out at the plate. Jeter was in the right place at the right time out of PURE INSTINCT.

You never get the sense with Jeter that he's going to play when he feels like it (Manny, Mo Vaughn, Sheffield). Un-like A-Rod and his circus life outside baseball, Jeter is THE role model for discretion.

Passing Lou Gehrig is certainly remarkable but only b/c these days players don't often play for the same clubs for 15 years. So in that sense, Jeter's feat is less about passing Lou Gehrig and more about his staying power as a Yankee. And on a team with the money and motivation to replace players at will, that says something.

More remarkable than Jeter passing Lou Gehrig is Jeter's place on the ALL TIME hits ranking: he's number 52 among ALL players of ALL time. He's going to finish THIS season in the top 50 and will most likely end next season near #30!

Being slightly ahead of Pete Rose at this point, it's not out of the question for Jeter to become the ALL time hits leader. More likely, if he stays healthy, he'll simply wind up in the TOP FIVE ALL TIME in hits.

    Now THAT'S something.
