So I got some electrical stuff today in preparation for shop power (still waiting on utility company to send the plans for me to sign off on).
Anyway, I need to be ready on my end when they get to the point of running wires so I will install the meter socket, breaker box, and 0-3 copper cable in preparation.
Hopefully the utility co. will come through soon with the plans.
They said approx 2 weeks (a week ago) for them to complete their design which I need to approve then hopefully things will progress quickly from there.20200228_182740.jpg

Should have went with the QO load center or an Eaton CH... :stirthepot:

I dont know the difference :).
I just told the local electric supply place what I needed.
Since they are a local company, they provide what works for local coding.
I dont have to have anything inspected because I'm outside city limits but still want everything safe and clean.

Simple answer, those are the "commercial grade" load centers compared to the "residential grade" that is the Square D homeline and Eaton BR. Adds a few "beefier" options like copper bus and more "robust" breaker construction over the residential grade. Plus several other nerdy differences that I won't get in to because I don't want to bore the class...

Yup SquareD QO is arguably the best. But I think Homeline will be perfectly fine for your shop.

So you placing the meter enclosure on exterior wall of shop or at pole?

I am new at this and while I do want a clean, code equivalent (not required because I'm in rural area), reliable, and safe system, I'm not overly anal retentive on the electrical system. I just need something that works reliably and safely for the long haul with headroom in case I ever want to expand.

For a small shop with a 1.5 ton 20 seer a/c, 5hp peak 240v air compressor, modern inverter TIG welder, 1 hp belt sander, 1 hp band saw, and misc other loads like LED light and such, a 200 amp supply should be more than enough for my needs.

@TRON, the plan is to install the meter socket on the exterior of the shop (utility company will install pole, dig and bury wire to shop).
I'm responsible for the meter socket, pvc expansion slip fitting, verticle PVC conduit and pvc 90° elbow so they can pull the wire to the meter socket.
So meter socket will be attached to outside of shop with breaker box mirrored to it on the inside.

Does this sound like a good setup?

Also, what do you experts suggest for inside wiring in metal structure with exposed walls?
    MC cable?

Open to suggestions from y'all and thanks for the help!

Yup I like the idea of the meter on the exterior wall of shop with the panel mirrored inside.

    200 amps will definitely suffice.
Most would probably use EMT conduit in that you can run multiple circuits through them. MC Cable would work though. Take a pic of the inside walls.

I’d definitely use 4 square boxes with industrial cover plates for all your 120/240v receptacles and switches.

    [/QUOTE]

Breaker box is to be placed between door and shelves.

@TRON do you need a better pic of inside walls?

Edit: You have a good point for using EMT vs mc. I hadn't thought of that.

I do plan on using 4 square boxes.

Quite a few ways to wire it here. But you might be able to fit some flat 2x4’s vertically behind those middle and top metal horizontal supports then you could possibly run wire like romex behind each of the 2x4’s. Stagger the 2x4s about 4ft apart. Then screw up some 4ft plywood or the liking all the way around. That way you got some good middle wall space to anchor things too. Including your panel

    Many options here

Hmmm, I like it! Romex is cheaper too (I think).

This is the section of exhaust going behind my JFR #8. I just dropped her off to get ceramic coated. 3 weeks and I'm 75% done with my dream exhaust.

    Killer!

So what is left after this comes back from coating?

Section 4 is in the process of having 2 304 SS hangers welded on. They will utilize the 2 rear most stock hanger locations. Then section 4 will go to Ceramic coat shop in 3 weeks when I pick up section 3.

Update: I signed the utility companies agreement on Tuesday and yesterday a guy from a gas company came by to mark that there were no gas lines around where I am getting power installed.
The utility company said hopefully within a month they will install the pole!
