    I have a 09 db cab forerunner 2wd lb 4.0 v6 1500 miles.
it gets 20.1 mpg with a odometer that is 5% fast with means I'm really getting 19.1 MPG

    I also have a 04 silverado 5.3 v8 extended cab.
it gets 22.o mpg with an odometer that is 99.9% accurate
    or 21.98 MPG

What can't figure out is why is the Chevy that has 147,000 miles on it, 1.3 liter bigger engine, 2 more cylinders, 1400 lbs heavier, and has a 4 speed vs a 5 speed auto getting better mileage.

I'm the only driver of both trucks and drive them alternately to and from work.

Did Toyota make the same mistake GM did with it's truck v6 just take a v8 and cut off 2 cylinders.

Is there a difference in the fuel delivery system or engine design?

What is causing the Tacoma to get less gas mileage than the Silverado?

Don't get me wrong I really like the Tacoma but would like to figure this one out. Thanks in advance for you thoughts.:)

Interesting. I'd like to know the answer to this too.

Just theorizing, maybe the six makes more power for it's size than the 8, and thus to make more power, you need to consume more gas? I don't know.

Have you measured the odo to be 5% fast?? Or are you going on the speedo being off??

Chevy has really been working on fuel mileage these last several years and I think Toyota has been coasting with their quality rep

My 2 Bosses both drive fullsize tahoes with every option known to man and beat the mileage my tacoma gets by at least 3 MPG
I know those Tahoes have to weigh in heavier then any Tacoma

I have heard of some guys say that when they changed their plugs in their trucks that when they pulled them they had 2 completely different sets of plugs and not all gaped the same. So they went and bought all identical plugs, gaped the same and things from then on were grerat!

We must've gone through this at least a thousand times: THE ODOMETER HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SPEEDOMETER.

You can calculate the difference. For example, in going from 245/75/16 to 265/75/16, it comes out to + 1.036.

    Vehicle:
    2014 SR5 DCLB 4x4
Color matched door handles, Weathertech floor liners, bed mat, Durafit seat covers, tailgate clamp, 2016 TRD Sport 17" wheels with Yokohama Geolander AT tires , Toyota exhaust tip, Toyota/Yakima bike rail mount, Toyota wheel locks, Toyota hitch cover, Redline hood struts, unifilter on air pump.
My 2004 Silverado reg cab 4x4 averaged 15 mpg. I did manage 18.5 on long freeway trips, but never came close to 22. I always thought that was good gas mileage for a full size 295 hp truck. My 2.7 Tacoma 4cyl only averages about 20. I haven't taken it on a long trip yet so I can't compare highway mileage.

My 09 Taco AC auto 4 cyl has gotten between 23-24 MPG since I have owned it (18K+ miles). The least I have ever gotten was 22 MPG. I drive close to 100 miles a day for work.

Im thinking that the answer is as simple as Chevy has a more fuel efficient truck.

in what strange alternate universe did your sticker say 21 MPG city and 29 MPG highway?

    Your 09 V6 4x4 Sport is 16 City and 20 Highway

Unless it was listed in km since you're a canuk...

Someone doesn't know how to convert- cause I just used Google to do both those conversations.

    And 13.3L/100km is 17 or so...and 9.8L/100km is 24
