That's because Canada uses the Imperial gallon in their measurements and not the US gallon. The imperial gallon works out to 4.56049 litres while the US gallon works out to roughly 3.78541 litres. As a result, you can't compare Canadian MPG to US MPG without doing the conversion first.

As to the question from the original poster, I'd suggest a few things:

    - Definitely need to Taco to break in more. Fuel consumption will be noticeably worse for a new vehicle. It's been that way on every vehicle I've ever owned.
    - For their respective size, I'm pretty sure that the 4.0 is a higher output engine per litre so perhaps it does require more fuel to get those higher output numbers. I don't imagine this is a big issue though.
    - Are the rear ends the same? Is the Chevy maybe geared for better fuel economy?
    - Similar tires, air pressure and tread design?
    - The odomoter shouldn't be off like the speedo. They are two independent systems. This means that the mileage calculation for the Taco may be off.
    - The Taco is basically brand new and we are coming out of winter. Winter usually results in the worst mileage because of temps and winter blend gas. Are you comparing the Taco mileage from this period with the Chevy mileage from the same period OR the Chevy's overall average (which would be better than it's average in the winter)?

    Good luck!

they get better gas mileage probably cause they have that new option where they can switch to 4 cyl 6 cyl or 8 depending on what they need

My 09 Std cab 2wd gets about 24 mpg (only 1200 miles so far).
The odometer is off about 1% (measures 20.2 miles in 20.0 actual miles).
The speedometer is off about 7% (measures 60 when doing 56).

Other than putting bigger tires on it, is there a mod to the computer that the service techs can do to correct the speedometer ?

I also have a full size Z71 Tahoe with everything on it, and i don't get anywhere near what i get in my Taco. I have had it since it was new, and have had it for a few years now, still not to many miles on it though, and I also have an 08 DC Taco, drive them both about the same, both go in the dirt and hit the highway pretty hard. I get about 14 mpg hwy in the Tahoe and about 22-23 in the Taco, so it doesn't even compare. I wish i got the mileage your bosses do, cuz it would make summers alot easier with the $5 a gallon we see here.

My wife drives an Avalanche and gets 15-18. My 04 Silverado does not have the cylinder control but has always turned in over 20 mpg. Our 99 with the v6 turned in 19 mpg
Even the Tundra is rated at 21mpg now on the highway with the v-8.
Could it be that a v-6 is an ineffient design and engine compared to the v-8 or straight 4

I just replaced 3 NGK's and 3 Denso's with 6 Denso iridiums, and in 2 weeks i have seen no increase in mpg. same 280ish miles from full tank to low fuel light on. I think thats about 18 gallons.

The Tundra has a six speed auto. That will help big time with highway mileage. Is your 04 Silverado a 4x4? Mine never got 20 mpg. It got the same as your Avalanche, 15-18.

My brother's full size 03 Silverado got about 15 mpg. My last truck, which I can't believe i let my friend who was the salesman sell it to me, was a Ford Sport Trac - THE WORST PIECE OF CRAP i've ever owned. It was a V6 and only got about 15 mpg - I quickly sold it after 6 months.

But I think your right, the newer Chevy's are much better on fuel economy - guess having Congress bitch you out for lagging behind on hybrids and CAFE rules helped...
