I have a 2007 Tacoma sport 2wd with the LSD only fluid sticker on the differential cover. I changed the fluid to valvoline 75w90 with lsd additive. Put a little over 3 quarts like 3.2(i changed my rear differential fluid on an incline on my driveway at a high angle so the rear was facing upwards and I put the amount in but it didn't overflow out like I seen on videos on you tube) drove fine in drive. But when I came back home, I noticed it made a chirping sound(in reverse) where it never made that noise before. What do you think that noise is? Is it normal?

I would first check the fluid level on a flat surface and see if there is any seepage out of the fill hole, if not add gear oil until it leaks out then you know its full.

It only makes the sound in reverse. But OK i will do that. I'll find a spot across the street and make sure. Could it be low on fluid? I put 3 bottles (1 qts each) and some of the 4th bottle(just a little bit) . I'll see if that helps

Was there any metal shaving on the drain plug? or in the gear oil that was drained? Its always good to recheck the fluid levels. I'm not sure what else it could be then?

The old fluid wasn't too bad. I just noticed that the old fluid was red and it didn't look dirty(I'm the newer owner and have 20k miles put on it) . The new fluid is a golden color. Not sure if that matters. But there wasnt metal shavings. I'll definitely go on a level surface and top it off tomorrow. I just hope I didn't mess something up inside the rear diff and I kind of feel I should've just left it alone

It's basic maintenance that's how you save money instead of going to the dealer which is expensive. Top it off and drive it you should be fine.

shopping_6a91a11fc0a7831b621b64b583012b02a52f9235.pngYou can add some of this also before you top it off to make sure there's enough friction modifier, you can buy it at Napa etc.

I was just thinking that as I was going through old thread about rear differential fluid changes. That maybe I should add friction modifier. Is friction modifier different from gear oil with lsd additives? If so i will definitely buy some tomorrow. Is this the stuff I only put 4 oz of with my 3 qts?

should be the same type of additive that's mixed in with the gear oil only more concentrated. If you have a Toyota dealer near you, you could buy their's as well most likey it costs more. It's a small 4oz bottle.

Yes there is a Toyota dealer right down the street. I will go and ask for it and give it a shot. At this point I'm open minded to help this slight squealing noise when I reverse

If I had to guess it sounds like a lube issue, go buy the friction additive and top off. That should take care of it if, if the truck was not making that sound before the fluid change.

Again I appreciate your input. I will definitely pick up that lubegard(and top off my diff fluid to make sure it drips out the full hole) and let you know how it goes for me

ok. thats weird... the only time i have ever had noise like that has been on my jeep and i found it by spraying every joint that moves when the car moves, one at a time, with wd40 until the noise went away. my noise was up front so i started at the transfer case and sprayed, moved the jeep - still squeaked, sprayed something else - still squeaked, etc until i sprayed, moved the jeep and there was no noise, so that means whatever i sprayed last was squeaking. usually that noise is U joints. it sounds like when i go through a BIG puddle and wash the grease out of my u joints off roading. i think maybe having the truck in the air and driveline at full extension for a while working on your diff caused a dry spot where there should be grease or something. it seems really unusual for your diff to squeak one way but not the other. i'd look at u joints.

For sure. Before I changed the diff fluid it didn't make that noise at all. Which was today in fact. Then in the evening i changed the rear diff fluid out. Went on a little drive(like 10 miles) and came back home. As I was backing in the driveway is when I heard it and caught my attention so much so I had my wife drive it back in then that's when I heard it. Now it's just parked and probably not going to use my truck(I can use my Corolla) and pick up friction modifier and see if that helps. If it doesn't I'll probably take it to the oil change shop and have them refill it. If that doesn't work, I'm still under a warranty on the driveline(Drive shaft, ring and pinion gears, pinion bearings, side
carrier bearings, carrier assembly, thrust washers, axle, axle bearings, and limited slip clutch pack) and can have the shop that fixed my Corolla take a look at it(I don't want it to get to thsg point and hope I didn't mess something up)

[No idea. I havent found an Synthetic oil, that didnt make the rear chatter (if LS equipped). I have tried Synthetic oil with No addative, factory addative, and double addative. All chattered. When I used Dyno oil, and recomended addative, no chattering. Only thing I can think of, is that the synthetic oils dont allow the friction modifier to work propperly in the Toyota diffs.]

I read that post earlier in the day debating if I should change my diff oil. I hadn't opened the drain plug yet and was seriously debating on not changing the fluid and leaving it. But now that I know what I know now it seems it has to be a specific fluid. I know this is going to sound ignorant, but what if I put the old fluid back in I still have it and have a pump and repump it back in after I drain this valvoline gear oil?
