So I was having a bad (low at 500 rpm) idle issue and did some YouTube research. I took off my throttle body (kept the coolant lines on) and cleaned it with a can of carb cleaner. And bam!! Idling at 800-1000 and made my motor run so much smoother. Maybe you guys should do the same. Very easy job and only took a 10mm a can of cleaner and a few shop rags or an old t-shirt.

:), Good job, a lot of stuff is easier than it looks. We have to get by the fear of I don't know how to do it, use the internet search tool, and get off our butts.

You meant to type Throttle Body cleaner, not carb cleaner, correct?

One will strip the non-stick protective coating off the throttle blade and the other won't. TB Cleaner is more mild but avoids leaving your TB blade open to corrosion.

I'm sorry I call BS that there is a coating on throttle blades to keep stuff from sticking to them, if that were the case then you could wipe them off with a rag and wouldn't need a solvent. Also I've never seen a corroded throttle blade other than on an engine that was stored outside for years.

Maybe Toyotas don't have it, but I'm pretty sure most do. My old 90s fords even had a sticker on them warning you not to clean with carb/brake cleaner and to use throttle body cleaner to not take the coating off.

Had to check to make sure I wasn't misremembering. It definitely is there although I couldn't find a picture of the whole sticker but you can read the gist of it

Yea I remember seeing those stickers on the older Fords, they got cleaned anyway. Nobody is gona replace a throttle body if it's just dirty.
The newer GM cars with the little 4 cyl turbo have such a tiny throttle body you gotta clean them just about every oil change or they set a intake airflow performance code.

You’re supposed to clean it? :anonymous:

174k on mine. Never touched it.
Hopefully the truck relearns the correct idle speed. 800 is too high on a warm engine. 650 is normal.

It’s probably just the ECM relearning the idle. But I don’t fix stuff unless it broke.

Been there, cleaned that, paid a shop to relearn idle and tps on a Chevrolet.
    I ain’t touch nothing until it’s broke.

I mean it's not technically a listed maintenance item but they certainly should be cleaned from time to time.
Some vehicles are more picky about a dirty throttle body than others.

When your gona notice it is upon a battery disconnect because on many vehicles that resets the learned idle compensation values back to 0, if the throttle is really dirty it won't idle right or may not want to idle at all until it relearns.

Idle speed depends on the engine and transmission configuration, manuals tend to have a higher idle set point than automatics.

Manuals are around 700- 800 where an auto is probably down around 600-700 in park and 550-600 in drive.

GM since around 07 has a scan tool function to reset the idle airflow compensation, it doesn't always reset with a battery disconnect.

Nissan/Infiniti you have to do an idle learn with a scan tool any time the throttle body is cleaned or replaced or they won't idle properly.

It’s me. I work on enough stuff that “doesn’t need” to be worked on.
When it comes to my stuff, I’m all about “not wanting too”……..

I’m having to learn to use FCA software. And I don’t even own a Stellantis product.
They need to have a standardized name system for all these damn modules.
And don’t get me started on the “abbreviations” for the modules. I have to have a cheat sheet to figure out what stuff is…..

After cleaning the throttle body and MAF, I disconnected the battery to reset the computer. No noticeable performance increase, but 1-2 mpg improvement.

well I cleaned it bc I just got this truck and it was pretty beat up. I’m just doing everything besides major engine work on it. Suspension stuff, fluid change, spark plugs/coil packs, new body parts that needs replacing. I’m trying to keep costs as low as possible but so far I sent about 3k on it. Not bad I’m my opinion. I got to get about another 5 years out of it.

Cleaned mine with CRC throttle body cleaner, new o ring, spark plugs, air filter, CRC MAF cleaner, wonderful results. It relearned idle after only a few miles.

Ok so what am I missing about the "new O ring"?
