As a long time lurker and infrequent poster here who appreciates that wealth of info available on this site, I need some help/advice on what if any steps I should take next regarding my Tacoma.
That's my 2017 TRD OR, it's got less the 50K miles on it. It's the 5th Toyota truck I've owned over the past 28 years. Five weeks ago the AC stopped working just as a record setting heat wave was building over Reno at the start of September. The AC would run for 10 seconds or so then turn itself off. Needless to say I wasn't happy. Since my GF was away I parked the Tacoma and drove her Prius for the next two weeks.

During this time what had been a quite fire season so far got busy and my fire engine got ordered up to Entiat, WA. We were gone for almost three weeks so my truck stayed parked in my driveway for almost five weeks. No big deal right? I get back two days ago and discovered this on the passenger side mirror.
The paint was blistered/bubbled all along the top of the mirror. WTF?

Walked over to the drivers side, same thing. This wasn't there five weeks ago. Reno just experienced its hottest Sept ever with 8 days in row over 100 deg and reaching a high of 106. Did the sun literally melt the paint off my mirrors? I have no clue how this happened. I'm out of warranty, but the truck has less than 50k miles on it. Anybody have any advice on how to approach my local Toyota dealer, or am I better just biting the bullet and paying whatever it takes to fix it. Thanks in advance.

Just typical clear coat failure. Do you use any protection on your paint? I like CarPro reload, but almost anything is better than nothing. That 8 days of over 100° didn't do it because we have a lot more than that here in Texas. If it's not on the rest of the truck, I'd at least clay bar it and get some sort of protection on there.

I had same issues with my 2017 inferno. Only the mirror caps everywhere else the paint was fine. My solution was to plastidip them black. Considered buying new ones in unpainted black to match the flares but went cheap route lol. Good luck and please update if Toyota helps to resolve it.

You can cry to the dealer, but there is nothing they will do for you. Get them repainted or wrap them

Unfortunately it looks like the clearcoat has started to fail. Since it sounds like you haven’t done any protection for your paint I’d prep and spray clear coat. You may also check the roof as it seems to be a flat surface where the clear coat is failing. Wax and use a protective product for UV.

I hadn't heard the term "Clear Coat Failure" before. Googled it and I know a lot more now.

As for protection on the paint, I get the truck detailed prior to every winter here locally. This is copied and pasted from the vendors website....
Package includes-Exterior- Wash, clay bar decontamination, buff and polish, conditioned and cleaned tires & wheels ,windows and glass water spot/scratch removal, finished with sealant wax to protect the paint.

I between I use Megiuars Ultimate Liquid wax every couple months. I'll definitely checkout CarPro reload.

It can be common, tons of variables obviously. Sometimes it's just inferior product or application by the manufacturer. Best thing you can do imo is to apply it more like every 4 to 6 weeks. Especially if you guys get tons of sun up there. If you don't end up getting the reload, make sure it's something synthetic as an actual wax vapes off fairly quick and you definitely don't want your roof or hood going out the same way.

If the truck is having clearcoat failure this early, not matter how many times you wax it, the issue is still going to occur eventually.

I live in the Sacramento Area and that heat wave was pretty brutal. I have the same inferno color on my tacoma. The clear coat failed but I saw the same thing on my old FJ before I sold it. It also was about 5 years old when it started happening.

You’re psyched it’s your plastic mirror caps and not the body of the truck. Those are cheap and easy to swap out. Take it as a warning and UV protect the rest of that truck now.

You should see the passenger side rear door of my super white 2017 tacoma. Its literally just bare metal. You get better paint quality on 10k msrp nissans.

Unfortunately that’s a common issue with vehicles that have red paint something to do with the UV from the sun. When you drive around start looking at vehicles that are red and you’ll notice that the roof, hood and trunk are typically faded. This is the reason why I don’t by any vehicles that have a red/orange tone
