Truck just hit 10k miles and it’s time for my first service. I’ve always serviced my own vehicles 100% of the time my whole life. This is the first time I’ve dropped one at the dealer for service and I can tell you the anxiety is REAL.

I contemplated just taking the hit and not taking the truck in for the free service and doing it myself but figured I’d give it a shot. I hope I’m not kicking myself when I go to pick her up because of some dumb mistake or scratch. I asked them to not rotate the tires as I just performed it and to try and keep their new disinfectant covid 19 cabin spray down off my interior glass.

The place was packed and service techs were walking around yelling at each other for missing keys for a Tundra in front of me. God help me.

anything I should check for when I go to pick it up? I’m sure I’ll have to let a ton of air out of my over inflated tires and check lug nut torque. Wish me luck.

It's a truck. It will survive the dealership. You might as well get the "free" service you paid for when you bought your truck.

I have no idea what day it is, but based on this post, I would say we hit Friday?

After dealing with my local dealers, I will never be more happy than when my truck goes out of warranty.

6 times at one dealer, had to return to repeat the repairs 3 times times, they stained my seat 1 time and pulled out some stitching another time (Walser toyota in bloomington MN, shit dealer)

other dealer was better, 3 times in, and 1 bad diagnosis. But they are further away from me.

I was wondering about this myself and wish it were an option. Some people won’t understand but when you maintain and mod your own vehicle you have a high bar and standard for work to be done on it. Call it whatever you want but in my mind there is no way for the dealer to perform superior service and care than I would for my own vehicle.

Itll be o.k. You sound like you are a pretty decent Tacoma mechanic yourself so you will know if something went amiss.
I on the other hand, have owned jeeps for 30 yrs and would be none the wiser until it was too late.

    Happy Friday wrench gobblers.

I let the dealership do my 10k oil change, and that was the last. Check the top side of the skid plate. They left oil on top of mine, and never noticed the fluid dripping from the transfercase. That did get fixed under warranty after I took it back. I've done all the maintenance since.

My fiancee works for an auto group that owns multiple dealerships. I would say being worried depends on the management of that dealership. As far as what to check for, I would check if it's actually been done.

The problem in my opinion is the way techs are normally paid especially for express service like an oil change. Pretty much gets paid a flat rate for the service based on some type of book that breaks down how long it would take to perform.
So say the book says it takes 30 mins to do an oil change and tech should get paid x amount of dollars per hour. Well, they will base the hours on the book. So the tech does 4 oil changes in less than an hr, he/she gets paid for 2 hrs worth of work. The reason why you get some dealerships not actually performing the tasks so the tech can fudge numbers. To combat that, the manager and service advisors suppose to do walkarounds and make sure the work does get completed.

That's only for express services and what seems to be common in my area. Some dealerships may not be like that.

    Thank you!

most of my confidence comes from past work/experience and honestly from a lot of the bright minds and info one can find on this very forum. You have to do a lot of homework and sifting through the miss info but a lot of quality info is out there.

I totally get the anxiety! I had no problems for the 10k visit, 20k on the other hand, see below experience:
I dont regret using the toyotacare services, but do suggest to anyone that they do a thorough check before leaving the lot.

Don't take it back again,, When you get it home remove the pan and check for the bolts loose/missing/cross threaded and mess he left....make sure drain plug was tightened...

They do nothing else...you gotta do the service on the rear/front diff, to see level.....you gotta grease if you have zirks.

You are on your own to check tranny fluid. The "computer says it's good" is TOTAL crap. Actual check procedure showed mine down 1 1/2 QT .

Don't let them see it again, unless it's warranty work.

    That's my 5 cents(CDN)….

    Good luck

Worked for Toyota Dealer, worked on big trucks professionally worked at Midas. If you didn't do it yourself, or KNOW the mechanic that did the work it must be checked. If you are gonna have to check it, you might as well do it. Just my 2 cents.
