When I put my OME lift and rear AAL; I put the carrier bearing and shim underneath the leaf springs. I called my local 4x4 shop; who are pretty reputable and he told me to first try and take out the carrier bearing drop to see what happen, then one step further take out the shim underneath the leafs. Putting a lift on these 4x4 trucks are such a pain in my ass and so much more work than I expected.:boom:

What I am confused about is how the relative angle of the first shaft compared to the trans is so much different for everyone. I have heard any numbers from 1.6-5.6* degrees down. I don't see how this degree is so different for everyone unless they have dropped there CB down. I haven't touched mine, and it is at 5.2* degrees down relative to the trans. I just don't see where numbers like 1.6 are coming from. Little help please.

So im 2010 Prerunner: 2" AAL in back and 2.5 up front

getting take off vibes and bad vibe at 75 (tires balanced for verification, exact same vibe at 75)

measuring off the flat of the trans:

    stock:
    Trans/1st axle 4.1
    Trans/2nd axle 2.4
    2nd axle to pinion: 0.2
    Trans to pinion: 2.5

    now i am

    Trans/1st axle 4.1
    Trans/2nd axle 5.5
    2nd axle to pinion: 2.6
    Trans to pinion: 2.5

this is consistent when i think about it, i increased the space between the body and the axel thus increasing the 2nd axles angle and the angle of the 2nd axel to pinion.

now... i've tried to flip Carrier bearing.. got...

    Trans/1st axle 2.5
    Trans/2nd axle 6.5
    2nd axle to pinion: 3.4
Trans to pinion: 3 (dont ask me how this changed i verified it a dozen times)
*slightly* better take off vibes but barley (prob in my head)

so i dropped the bolts to a drop of 0.42 inches (for measuring purposes) and got....

    Trans/1st axle 5.1
    Trans/2nd axle 4.5
    2nd axle to pinion: 1.7
    Trans to pinion: 2.5

but i didnt have anything i could use for that, so i slapped in some 1/2 in spaces( eh.. kinda close right?:p) worst vibes.. take off shuddered all the way to 25mph and it had vibes all over the power band..

im going to try and measure 1/8 and see if that gets me close to even with the 1st and 2nd axel... but the angle on the 2nd axle to pinion is still going to be ~2 - trans to pinion will still be off but it appears to be off from the factory :( ? if i shim the axel to "close" the gab between the axel/pinion im going to throw off the trans/pinion degrees.

    oye my head hurts. :frusty:

I'm starting to believe in this whole angle thing less and less.

First off, based on above post, it looks like the pinion angle in relation to the TC is 2.5* up stock. So why have I read over and over again in this thread that on a stock tacoma they will be the same and a "good" lift kit will keep them the same? This lead me to believe that the rear AALs were the culprit in raising the pinion angle, but it looks like they are 2.5* up from the start.

Secondly, it's discouraging when members like jsilver follow the "rules" to a T, having his pinion and TC angles equal but opposite, with his first and second shaft within a degree of eachother....but nothing...actually made it worse.

I am not trying to tell anyone they are wrong, or bash anybody for trying to help us out, because I really appreciate the input and help....I'm just wondering if there are more "rules" than what have been established. Seems like there is a lot more variables to deal with than what has been tossed around thus far. But once again, not trying to bash anyone at all, just trying to better understand.

I've said this before. It seems "almost" everyone with a 1.5-2" aal gets this take off shutter / vibe. Others who have gotten 3-3.5" quality leaf packs say they dont have this problem. I would like to see someone here who has this problem upgrade to a 3-3.5" pack and report on the results. I dont want that much lift in the rear cause I dont want to go any higher in the front - for now. If you get vibes at higher speeds there may be something else going on cause I dont get anything other that the take off shutter from 5-7 mph.

dude, i don't know what the deal is with the shudder yet but my brand new 2012 off road dc does it from 5-25mph on accel and it's getting worse. i have less than 100 miles, and bone stock.
i'll post what the dealer says next week and also plan to discuss the driveline angle with them.

I'm looking into this as well, but I'm not sure if we need to have a double cardan or if a 1 piece with a single u joint at either end is adequate. I've talked to a local shop who's willing to make me one.

Has anyone thought to stick a GoPro or similar 'action' cam under there with a Joby or a magnetic mount to check on some of the 2wd/4wd wrap/torquing issues?

Might give more insight on AAL vs. full replacement leaf pack?

All of this talk has me seriously reconsidering doing any lifting at all...

    Cheers.

Yah I'm starting to think that we're not supposed to have cancelling TC/pinion angles since it wasn't that way from stock and just maybe that 2.5* degree angle is cancelling during load from acceleration

This is what I have going on FWIW.

Dakars and OME 886. Plenty of armor.

Also measure off the flat of the yoke, move the vehicle until the yoke ear you want is parallel with the surface of the ground.

That's a lot of axle wrap. The stock leaves suck, but I don't think they suck that badly.

The reality of it is, you can set your pinion maybe a degree lower if you want so you get a canceling effect under power but 2.5 degrees is extreme. Even if it's that extreme at take off you should come down under cruising or even light acceleration, which is most of your driving. I just don't see it.

Oh wait I got it totally wrong. My pinion is 3.5 degrees too high. If anything, the axle wrap is making it worse.

I blame it on the Toytec AAL that totally rusted within a month of install. I'm starting to notice that others are having issues with the 2" Toytec AALs pushing the pinion angle way up. Perhaps a bad batch or they are having them manufactured in a new place now?

^^Yep I notice the same thing! Im leaving my driveline angle alone until I can get the wheelers 3leaf AAL and then I will recheck all my angles and fix as needed.. :)

I hate this single AAL!!!! :(

was wondering if someone could give me a hand with my truck?
I got an angle finder, its not the digital one you are all using so I cannot reset it.
On my transfer case i got 90* (good ?)
on the front shaft i got 7*
on the rear shaft i got 9*
and on the pinion i got 6*(does this sound right??
what steps should i take. I dont have terrible vibes. only a slight shudder around 5-10mph and some while accelerating. heres a pic on how i did the pinion angle

this doesn't matter because your truck might not be level

this seems quite steep. you're 7 degrees down from your TC and, from what I've read, 8 degrees is the max and anything close to it will produce added wear.

close to the front shaft angle so this can be fixed easily with carrier drop.

no it doesn't. you want that angle to match the TC so I doubt your measurement is correct.

what kind of lift do you have?
