Hey I just got a free Kitten from a room mates friend. She was giving a way six kittens (2mo old) and we got an all white male. I have owned many different animals, but I have never owned a cat. I have all the essentials for the kitten. Is there anything else I need to do? Things to teach it, manners, what to look out for, etc?

Get his nuts cut. Cat's are very self sufficient. The only thing it will require is a tummy rub.

 +1 on the nuts, they are definently self-sufficient, make sure there is a designated area for it to go to the bathroom in the house and while you are housebreaking him make sure you direct him there when he goes, they will learn, when they get older and into adulthood about 3-4 years you can leave it home alone overnight and even on weekends as long as you leave enough food (you will eventually know how he eats), and if you leave a bathroom open so they can drink from a clean toliet. Cats easily choose their human parent and as they get older follow you more and they pick up on your intentions of body language faster than dogs. The father from meet the partents is right about cats. They loved to petted but will let you know when its time to stop.

He needs shots and to be fixed.... This part depends on whether he claws your furniture.....and declawed if he's a HOUSE cat. If he's going to be allowed outside, then disregard the last bit. (to those of you who says it's cruel, well, if you have good furniture and don't want it destroyed.....)

    Teach a cat BBBWAAAAAAAAAHHHHHAAAAAAAHHHHHAAAAAAA

Cats are to whatever to learn anything we want to teach them.

But a laser light and a hard wood floor is hours of entertainment with a cat.

If its a male nueter him, or he will spray... mark hi territory like a dog does. And thats not a pleasent smell...Had a male cat that did this. This one I got now he was fixed and front claws removed at 5 months no trouble .They like attention when they want it, not when you want to give it to them. And a cat nip mouse will keep it entertained too.My cat is almost 6 and still loves to eat catnip. He gets hyper with it for a short while, then he just lays there. Cats are funny with some of the stuff they do,You will enjoy him.

This is my cat Emma. She doesn't need much, just a good belly rub and food and she's happy. She loves cooked shrimp. She plays hide and go seek. When you go to pick her up she runs about 5 feet and looks back. If you don't walk toward her she comes back and taunts you again. Once the chase begins she will go hide (she has about a dozen spots for hide and seek) you find her and she goes to another spot. By the time you find her in the third place she's purring.

(The litter box is not in the bathroom anymore, that was the night we brought her home and it was a temporary solution)

The worst thing you can do to a cat is remove its front claws! If it gets out of the house it has nothing to defend itself with! There is also a DIRECT connection between a cat's claws and its psyche. My mom did this to her cat and it was an absolute wreck of a cat thereafter. You put it to a scratching board right away (we fasten one to the wall) and once the cat marks that board it won't touch anything else to claw.

De clawing a cat is the lazy solution for owners, kind of lick a lobotomy for your children instead of teaching them accountability, it's quick and you get what you want, who cares if you screwed up you cat. Cats get depressed enough with claws. You can teach a cat to not scratch the furniture as said above.

I have owned cats my whole life. First female cats have always been the best choice, IMHO. Some male cats can act like male dogs, i.e., lift their leg and spray stuff, even in the house, this is rare for cats though. My cats have always been indoor cats, like dogs I don't feel they should run the streets. Cat box training is a breeze, set up box, toss cat in box...done. They can be very picky eaters, food they love today and can't get enough of they don't want anything to do with tomorrow. Every cat I have ever owned has been spotless, they are very clean. If you have a cat scratch post they tend to only scratch that, not always. We have had furniture damaged in the past. Our cats love toys balls, little toy mice and so on, we will toss them in a basket, an hour later they are all over the house.
Good luck, oh ya, I forgot. You never own the cat, they just let you feed them.
