Easy to become complacent when nothing ever happens, so having a weapon at arm's reach should be second nature and automatic. This might (and apparently does) seem crazy and paranoid to some, but, OP's experience is (sadly) not unique. When all the bad guys in the world stop doing bad things to people, then I will relinquish my protection. I would be a naive fool to do otherwise:)

not sure i understand you are trying to say.

The law always makes it more clear! In some cases, clear as mud.......just make sure you know they are posing a real and unmistakeable threat to your person or your family. Many states would put you in prison if you shot through your door (for obvious reasons). Many states also can imprison you for shooting a thief that is not "far enough" in your home. It's good to know your local laws for sure.

from a miltary perspective you went through your escalation of force with reasonable accomodation. SHOUT SHOW SHOVE SHOVE SHOOT SHOOT is simple basic procedures for handling a threat. Clearly you couldnt show your force but you shouted, thus making the threat retreat. no need to go further from here. If you would have done wat a lot of wanna be gun slingers would have want which is for let him get in and ambush him with bullets is a naturally no go!!!.. First of no matter how afraid you never know who is on the other side of the door. for all that matters it can be a drunk family member, or possibly a thief (rookie kid perhaps) but the point is use proper force once Poisitive identification is achieved. otherwise continue gradually or as appropriate for the safety of all your loved ones. Goodluck TW.

i was gonna ask the same thing
just curious... whats the benefit of this?

cause in my mind i see a panic word being like "cheese" right? so only your family knows that.

i can see myself running down the hall way screaming cheese! cheese! cheese! and my woman goes, where the fuck is the cheese at! oh shit bad guy grab the 12 gage! wheres he at! or i can run down the hall way and say "hunny, someones trying to break in grab the AK."

    see what im sayin?

not being a dick, i am being somewhat sarcastic but i really am curious

I like the fact you have a panic word with your wife.. We kinda have the same concept. If I yell "get babs" she knows to get the shotgun. (I call my shotgun Babs). That way if I"m being attacked, odds are the attacker thinks she's running to get a baby or a pet, not a gun.

Also have "get the fuck out of the fucking house now" which is the panic word for 'get the fuck out of the fucking house now"

it should be a serious thing, a word you never use

I can see how "Hun grab the gun!" could lead to "What? why? Is there someone at the door?"

but if it's like "hun. REDHAWK"
she'd know to STFU, grab the 9 and lock the doors

the benefit, is clear, consise, and rapid communication that is understood by spouses/family... if the SHTF, you aren't going to have the luxury of bickering back-n-forth, second guessing the intent/seriousness/etc..., - especially if perp just busted down your door...

My fiance and I also have a panic word. We have changed it recently because she couldnt ever remember it. It was "gorilla pie" She had a hard time, because it wasnt threatening at all, and didnt have any "panic" associatied with it. In my mind, it needs to be a set of words, or single word that isnt ever used in day to day conversation. You can come up with whatever you want, but in the end when it is spoken, you and yours need to hit condition red RIGHT NOW.

OP happy to hear you and yours weren't injured or anything. I like this idea of the panic word

Many years ago I'd heard of a "special" word that only family know to give your kids. Teach them to only go with someone who knows the word. If someone comes to get them, saying mom or dad was in an accident and the kid doesn't hear the right word, he's not supposed to go with the person...

Had the day off so I went to the range with my Glock. Felt good to get a quick refresher, I haven't shot much lately since the weather's been cold.
