Many of those builds are not legal in a few areas too. Gotta have mud flaps or fenders for tires that stick out and RGB halos cannot be on while driving.

I'm pretty sure every single jeep wrangler in NC is modified. Most dealers sell them modified anyway

You can actually get the touchless key entry with the wrangler, its called proximity something, but its a separate stand alone option, like $795, jeep likes to nickel and dime you for options.

Building a dedicated crawler is the way I went when I was looking for something with a solid front axle to rock crawl. Ended up with a Suzuki Samurai instead of a Wrangler but I did the Wrangler thing already and wouldn't want anything later than a TJ. Unfortunately, people are trying to charge CRAZY money for even a mostly stock TJ these days. I also liked the idea of the Samurai because its something I wouldn't mind cutting into and beating on.

What, go to a Jeep forum and post endlessly about how the JKs drive like shit and fall apart and you can't wait to get back in a Tacoma? Yes please.

Yep. That’s what Jeep’s are all about. Crawling. IMO, none better. If that’s your thing, get a Jeep. Scrub to 1:20, and see your limits, though. My Tacoma pulls a trailer; it doesn’t sit on one.

So worth it to be able to do stuff like this and truly not care if you flip over backwards.

I been driving my Jeep since I bought it new in 78.
The new Jeeps do not compare with it. But at 62 my Tacoma is the way to ride now.502E787B-4E38-4EFE-9126-07DE6370E7CB.jpg

I got a Jeep Wrangler as a rental on a trip to Colorado a few years back. The hard waterproof interior was crazy cold in 30 degree temps. The lack of HP in the 2.5 engine was truly shocking.

Tacoma’s are really neat trucks. My wife loved all hers.

Not sure what trim package the OP was driving (probably a base model), but I have been in a few gladiators with the Mojave package( fox shocks). They ride great. A couple buddies have JLUR that swapped over to Accutune off-road 2.5 lift with Fox shocks. Another smooth riding vehicle.

That is a question I’ve got for the Jeep guys: what’s acceleration and highway travel like with a V6 and 37s? Does the Jeep handle it well?

I own an '11 Taco TRD OR and a built '04 Jeep TJ-U ...an LJ. Both have things that they do well and things they don't do well. Personally I wouldn't have a Wrangler of any year as a daily driver. And I share Donny Baker's opinion of the Gladiator.

I rented one a few times and drove it on the beach dunes - a lot of fun. But it felt like a sheet metal box on the highway and visibility/field of view seemed restricted. Taco rides like a Cadillac in comparison. But they look cool and they have a cult following - I get it.

As an owner of both who spends time for each one on their respective forums, I can tell you that Jeep guys say the same exact things about tacoma guys. I got a screaming deal on my LJ, but it definitely needs some love still and I wouldn't want to DD it as is long term, although I will be for a couple weeks until my truck is back after it's fixed from my hungry squirrel incident. It's my 5th Jeep and I'm sure I'll have more in the future and one thing I love about them, or at least TJ and older, is that they are so cheap and easy to modify or repair. I have no problem cutting, drilling, welding, or any other fun stuff like that on it. On my Taco I still don't like doing any of that on such a nice new truck so for when I needed a CMC I paid a professional to do it. They both have their place and I enjoy them both tremendously.

We rented a JKU Rubicon for 2 weeks touring Alaska. Being freakishly tall, I found the JKU had more legroom and was more comfortable than my Tacoma for long drives. I think the seats are more comfortable as well but that's also probably because of my bony ass, YRMV.

The day when I will need a full-size truck again is rapidly approaching - I doubt I'll keep the Taco. I'm seriously considering a short-wheelbase JK Rubicon build as my off-roader when that happens.
