I am getting more used to the truck. ECT is helpful, and everyone who said 'give it time', I think you're correct. I am learning the truck better, and I hope it is learning me :)

I'm sure someone, somewhere, some day, will make a supercharger. If all else fails just hold off and you'll have the most badass truck ever. TRD PRO Supercharged:burnrubber::bowdown:

Well... You could have a manual transmission that pings and knocks and creeks... I have a well-kitted 2013 DCSB if you want to even trade???

I just posted the pic to show what I have averaged over 2-3 hours on the highway, I get anywhere from 22-26 regularly from what the computer says, there was no intent to mislead or deceive...

    @Mountainwolf

    Power:
This truck is actually faster than your old truck. The driving experience is weak because of the way Toyota has decided to program the ECU as this thing controls everything including how much the throttle plate is open. I would not buy any controller at the moment. I would wait to hear the results of the Orange Virus Tune.... lots of information is located here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2016-toyota-tacoma-v6-ecu-tuning-alpha-release.495735/

I would read that whole thread if interested in a better driving experience. In the meantime, just learn how to drive the truck and be okay with giving lots more pedal to get it to go. This engine is also much smoother than the 4.0 at higher rpms.

    Transmission:
The transmission is going to shift, probably a little less than with the ECT on. It's just the way the engine was made. It's possible that the OV tune will give a little more torque requiring less shifting, but that's just speculation. Until I see it, I wouldn't hold my breath. I spent time here before I bought and knew this going in, I'm okay with it.

    Mileage:
The truck is very sensitive to how you drive it. I would spend a couple of weeks using that display screen that shows MPGs and try to get better gas mileage through how you drive it. Try to get the best mileage all the time. You don't have to keep doing this, but I found it really enlightening on how the truck runs. With heavier tires and no air dam, I can get 20-21mpgs on a tank through my daily commute if traffic isn't bad. I generally get about 18 while not paying attention though. Before I changed tires, 24mpgs was not too hard.

The other thing is that driving over 65 really starts to hit the mileage on this truck too. Fill a tank, cruise at 55mpgs and you'll be surprised at how well this truck sips gas.

    Hope that helps.

Welcome! Those 275 70 16 D Rated KO2 Bro Tires aren't helping your MPG at all........ Plus its all about the SPG (Smiles Per Gallon) not the MPG!

Oh yeah, I missed that. I think the tires are 15lbs heavier EACH. And this is rotating mass, not sprung weight. Big penalties for that since F=ma.

That's a lot of paragraphs to explain some horrible driving experience. Lot of work to make a $40k truck get good mileage. I've really hope Toyota listens and figures out the 2018 model.

5 is a lot of paragraphs? How about this:

New truck is faster. New truck part throttle may need better tune. Transmission is shifty because low rpm torque isn't there, maybe because of tune. New truck gets better mileage if you drive it like paw paw would.

Ive tuned cars all my life. No amount of leaning out an air fuel ratio or adding timing down low will cure that low end tq. I would not hope for that.

Spot on with my observations, except since I drew these conclusions from my test drive I didn't check MPG. I had gone to the dealer all excited with cash and my 2009 Sport for trade but had to forget about it after the test drive.

    none yet/none planned! It's perfect!
I second this statement! That guy is a troll! I drive in 5th and 6th gear a lot in the city and get around fine. Yes sometimes I just give it more gas but I don't downshift on a slight gradient!

It is amazing how people on here constantly have to defend stupid statements from people that seem to have probably never set foot in a 3rd gen or don't have a clue how to drive. Just hope the Mods at some point start cleaning up the trolls up on this site!

I appreciate the responses. I wasn't so much complaining about the gas mileage, as I was saying that Toyota choked this truck down (smaller engine; more econo high gear tranny) in the name of economy, but so far, my Gen 2 got very similar mileage. The torque down low is the main issue, and torque is a much wanted feature of a truck in most cases. My analysis is that sometimes, even when the truck is in the correct gear, the throttle response takes a few seconds to 'kick in' .. there is a delay (fuel delivery)? I am getting more used to the truck, and like it better every day. I agree with everyone who said the truck will improve with time, and that I will learn that it is to be driven a bit differently than the Gen 2. Really digging the looks and ride... lots of compliments !

The break in period everyone talks about is more in the head of the owner. Your breaking in yourself to live with the way the truck drives more than the truck changes as it breaks in.

Oh? In think It's difficult to speak for everyones experience regarding their 3rd Gen's performance and process. I can only speak for myself (btw this my 4th Taco) I would say there is "some" validity to what you assume about the 3rd Gen process for individuals, that indeed there is a psychological component. But, from my expierence with this 3rd, there is no doubt a break in process that comes in time with this vehicle. And when I get my 3rd Gen off the lot of my Dealer (45 days today) due to leaky Diff recall. I will have fresh take on my 3rd Gen performance : )
