That's the claim from K&N...would love to get a personal opinion though...

They wouldn't advertise it if it wasn't true. 17 to 19 hp gains I've noticed. There's bar graphs that can back all this up, with red lines AND blue lines!

Im betting they took a stock truck and drove it around the 91/215 during rush hour on the hottest day of the week, went to the shop didnt hook up a fan, and let er rip 10 times... recorded the lowest numbers.

Then waited till coolest NIGHT of the year, pushed the truck on rollers, installed the intake, stacked dry ice in strategic places, got out a mondo fan, cranked the shop ac up, leaned the afr, let er rip, fudged some setup parameters and agreed if caught they would claim "within accepted variance of a dyno run", recorded the best noombars, and heres u go.

I think the 3rd Gen forum on TW is trying its hardest to be the equivalent of "The National Enquirer".

Jokes and memes are great, but 9 posts here with 0 useful information.

You haven't been around long enough to know that this is essentially a joke. There's a new thread about added hp with cold air intakes every week.

The thing is, most of the Tacoma owners are former/current "sport" car owners. Mustang, Camaro, etc all really do see added hp from CAI and tunes. They assume its the same for every vehicle.

It very well make that kind of power, but doing so because they've engineered the intake around the MAF housing to in a way to produces less air volume through the sensor than OEM which means in open loop when the ECU is relying on an accurate MAF reading to properly hit target AFR's, it's running lean. Makes more power, but not safely, and probably not consistently.

    Please quote the ad specifically.

Does it say 'up to' 18hp? Most power adder claims are like that.

Just remember, 'up to' means 0 to 18. They aren't promising you anything.

Tons of threads around with explanations why CAIs do limited improvements for any vehicle, sports or otherwise.

Keep in mind what CAI stands for. The first question is always 'is it really'. Also remember a 10* intake drop = about 1hp. If your ambient is 180* lower than the current intake source, you might actually hit 18hp at that point.

Sorry to say there is nothing special about these $35k trucks that will make them react any differently.

That is true and I highlighted the key part. A CAI alone (many times it isn't getting cold air anyway) won't give but a few hp in most conditions, to make the most of any mods (H/C/I) a tune is necessary. The ones that actually work suck ambient air from in front of the vehicle and can get fresh air rammed in at higher speeds, vararam is one of the best in terms of actual performance. As you noted a regular or street motor has much different potential then a sprots car motor that has much untapped potential blocked by restrictions and tuning. Where a normal old car or CUV motor might get 20 HP from an intake, exhaust and tune a Camaro, Mustang, ect can see over double that depending on the application.

I looked at it. It says it adds 18 HP, but it's basically at full throttle. You won't feel a difference in normal driving. You will convince yourself you do, after spending $300 bucks, but in reality, no difference. It will sound better though. Make sure you put the sticker next to the KO2 sticker on your back glass.
